Welcome, tech enthusiasts, to another episode of "Technical Talks with Sanket." I'm your host, Sanket, and today, we're diving into the incredible transformation of rooftop solar in India.
In 2015, India aimed to reach 40 gigawatts of rooftop solar power by 2022. However, by 2019, only 1.9 gigawatts were achieved, and then the COVID-19 pandemic slowed things down.
But, surprisingly Since March 2021, rooftop solar has made a remarkable comeback. In just two years, from March 2021 to March 2023, India added a massive 4.4 gigawatts, beating the total added in the previous four years. The good news continues, with another 4 gigawatts expected in the coming year..
So, what's driving this revival? Well, several factors are joining to fuel this solar revolution. One key player in this transformation is the increased confidence from financiers. The saturation of credit-worthy commercial and industrial customers has provided a stable foundation for the industry's growth.
Another driving force is the shifting dynamics in the energy landscape. States are moving from traditional "net metering" to "net billing," making rooftop solar more financially attractive for individuals and businesses alike.
But it's not just the big players getting in on the action. The (MSME) sector is also contributing to the boom. As the interest from this sector grows, so does the overall adoption of rooftop solar across diverse segments of society.
One innovative approach that's making solar energy more accessible is the OPEX model. Under this model, solar companies set up rooftop plants and directly sell the power, offering competitive prices ranging from Rs 4 to Rs 5 per unit. This not only eases the financial burden on consumers but also accelerates the shift towards sustainable energy.
Of course, it wouldn't be a success story without its challenges. Issues like the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers and some unfriendly state policies remain hurdles. However, the overall trajectory of rooftop solar in India is indisputably upward.
As we wrap up today's episode, it's clear that the rooftop solar industry in India is not just bouncing back but soaring to new heights. With ambitious targets on the horizon, innovative financing models, and a diverse range of adopters, the future of solar energy in India is looking brighter than ever.
That's it for today's episode of "Technical Talks with Sanket." Thank you for joining As always, stay tuned for more exciting tech stories and insights. Until next time, this is Sanket, signing off.
