Québec is the city where I started mixing this crazy, new, energized music—in bars on weekdays, and on Saturdays on the radio (Zoosémiotique on CKRL-FM)—at a time when no one had ever heard electronic music. Some knew about Kraftwerk, but there was no real culture other than commercial radio back then. Québec truly had passionate record shop owners with incredible curiosity. A special shout-out to Stéphane Parent at "Platine", the record store: he was always our savior, telling us when new tracks had finally arrived! Nothing could stop us from meeting up there, I tell you!They called me a "pioneer of the Québec province scene" on the web lately and when they invited me this year. I was shocked, surprised, and it felt really good inside. But you can't create a scene alone... Some of the best, craziest techno lovers I've ever met are right there where it all started, in Québec City. SHOUT OUT to St_Michel and Nic B... They were also pushing the musical scene, keeping it alive and growing. Sure, I had a radio show that really helped, but with these guys, we were becoming strong at all levels of the scene.
People from as far as the FM antenna could reach would drive up to two hours just to show up to our events! There was really NOTHING like that music. ... and that crazy guy on the radio! so they told me... :)
I admit I was totaly pumped, excited, totaly creative on my mixes at all times when on air. I was also very present on the improve theatre scene during that periode in time, and I guess that powered me also a little bit :). Listeners would show up to my DJ nights, Mardi Techno-Primitif, during the famous Midnight Express years. I’d call everyone to "gather-up" over the radio, and I’d fill the place on Tuesday's! Packed, proud, and full-on techno nights! I had a deal with the owner; I asked him for the weakest night he could give me. He said, "Well, we sell three beers on Tuesdays, so..."
So hey thanks a lot, and special shout outs to my craziest DJ friends, who never left it cool down ever since ...and they know their thing, like smoothness feels love - DJ Nic B and St-Michel to name just a few cause there are more! They were totally a part of it all back then and prooving strong and grounded ever since.
We were all on this new music revolution together, feeling the electronic beast of technology and th energy of its gatherings as THE thing. And it really was, because we all knew exactly what was going on...
