RCA Selectavision CED

1981 – The first vinyl video record, a.k.a. the videodisc, hit stores in the U.S. The “Capacitance Electronic Disc” looked just like any other vinyl record protected in a plastic caddy and held 60 minutes of NTSC video. That is approximately 27,000 frames per second.

However, the CED players did not make the impact RCA had hoped. Only 100,000 were sold by the end of the year. The “BetaMax vs. VHS” war was in full swing and the tapes were considerably smaller than the discs. Laserdisc was also available to the public, which led to a lot of confusion of formats.

The RCA Selectavision was retired in 1984 with the last discs released in 1986

One thing SXSW Interactive brings out is some great concepts and prototypes. I seem to get to try more here than any other conference. Panasonic was there to show off some great concepts for food, clothes, and even a way to become a better presenter.

There were several products in the house. I focused on four of them.

Bento, MonStyle, A.M.P. and the Social Appearance Coaching Device at the Panasonic House SXSW

Bento @ YourOffice

Imagine you forgot your lunch or it got crushed in the great subway accident of 2017. No worries! Simply pull out your smartphone and order via Bento. At lunch time, you simply scan your QR code on the phone to a refrigerator that contains your purchase. No waiting for delivery drivers that are overwhelmed with other orders.

Bento uses a smart locker approach when it’s time to retrieve your food.

A.M.P. (Ambient Media Player)

Moving photo frames is not a new concept, but A.M.P. is working to get your a more relaxed environment. These are not meant as a TV, but more of a platform to enhance the living space. You first use the app to figure out your mood – happy, sad, stressed, etc. The screens will emit video and sound that help with your mood, either to enhance or diminish.

Ambient Media Players come in multiple sizes and also come with a control disc to change the video or adjust volume. Starting at $3,000, this system gives you a break from your urban lifestyle.

MonStyle

You might not want to run the washer, or you simply have delicate clothing. Mon Style is derived from the French term. The system uses water vapor to clean the garment. Put in a detergent and an effector, then let the garment get cleaned. It does take 6 hours for a cycle, but if you need to clean a blouse or jacket for the next day, this is perfect.

High-end hotels could even see this in the rooms because it’s really easy to refresh your clothes for the next day. It will be priced under $2,000 with the detergent and effector sticks at $1 each.

Social Appearance Coaching Device

O.K. It’s a glowing bra. But there is more to this undergarment that meets the eye. This device is a new way to help you when you are presenting. The device is still in rough prototype mode and doesn’t have a name yet. But you wear this device as you present and it helps you from fidgeting, slouching, and moving too much. The device will monitor your stress to help improve your communication skills.

Jack Dorsey’s Twttr page

2006 – Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass launch Twitter (a.k.a. Twttr) with Jack’s first Tweet. “Just setting up my Twttr” went across the network of only a few followers. Similar to Alexander Graham Bell’s “Mr. Watson, come here” statement or “Mary Had a Little Lamb” into a wax cylinder.

Twitter was officially founded, but still in beta. The group at first didn’t acquire the highly priced “Twitter.com” until they had a proof of concept. Six months in, Twttr needed their “i” and “e”.

Walmart and VR

Picture yourself shopping a local store without leaving the home. That is what Walmart showed off in the VIP lounge. In all reality, VR shopping could happen today, with items shipping to your door within minutes. But this is only a small part of what VR can do.

Many other vendors show off ways to simplify your life in the VIP Lounge. My friend, Dave Mathews was showing off his company’s platform called NewAer using proximity to find, purchase, and learn.

I also got to check out Pepper – the brand engagement robot. Pepper greeted me and took photos for the Capital Factory wall.

You may or may not like your Internet speed right now, but in some areas, Internet is non-existant. We’re not talking 3rd World countries, either. There are many areas in the U.S. that also go with little to no signal for children trying to learn and grow. That is why Vint Cerf helped create the People Centered Internet. I got to sit and talk with Vint at the IEEE Tech for Humanity Series at SXSW in Austin, TX about where we are in this initiative.

Who is Vint Cerf?

Recognized as a founding father of the Internet, Vinton Gray Cerf was best known as co-inventor of the TCP/IP with his team at DARPA. Cerf then moved to MCI to help launch the first commercial email system – called MCI Mail.

Vinton continued on, helping develop ICANN. He currently sits on multiple technology boards overlooking the changes as we move to mobile and beyond.

People Centered Internet

But before we can move on, we must first make sure we leave no one behind. That is why Vinton is adamant about People Centered Internet. In it’s early stages, the group explores ways we can get wireless signals to everyone. From Balloons, to satellites, towers, and much more.

Looking past the United States, 3.7 billion people do not have reliable access to the Internet. Stories of what people have to do to connect to their loved ones via email or voice calling can be a rather daunting task.

Ways You Can Help PCI

With partners IEEE, the World Economic Forum, World Bank, Internet Society, NSRC, and 100MLives, the PCI group looks for people that can lend their talents to help build, code, and even just donate so the group can build the resources needed to reach those 3.7 billion.

Albert Einstein

1916 – Albert Einstein sent a paper off to Annelen Der Physik. The paper was called “Die Grundlage der Allgemeinen Relativitatstheorie” – translated as “The Foundation of the General Theory of Relativity”.

The paper included the Principle considerations about the Postulate of Relativity, Mathmatical auxiliiaries for establishing the general covariant equations, theory of gravitational fields, and Newton’s theory as first approximation.

For years thereafter, people studied this theory and tried to prove or disprove it.
