In the last of my interviews with participants in the British Inventors’ Project, I’m with Avril from Ding Labs (http://dinglabs.io) and their Ding Smart Doorbell. She tells me more about it.

At first glance, the doorbell looks the part, dressed in “on trend” minty green. Broadly, there are two parts, the Ding Chime and the Ding Button. Obviously the Button goes outside by the door for visitors and pressing the Button will ring the Chime. In addition to ringing the bell, Ding will make a voice call to the owner’s smartphone so that a two way conversation can take place between the caller and the owner.

The Ding Chime connects via WiFi to the home network and in addition to connecting to a smartphone, there are other communication options such as a text message or a call to a land-line. It’s intended that the Ding Chime will be an easy user fit.

The Ding Smart Doorbell (http://dinglabs.io/) is still under development but the team are aiming to keep the costs down to around GB£100. A Kickstarter is expected in September with delivery in April 2017.

With our penultimate visit to the British Inventors’ Project at Gadget Show Live, I’m with Lesley from KiddieRail (http://www.kiddierail.co.uk/). She saw that for children banisters on stairs were too fat and too high for them to use comfortably so it’s hardly surprising to see that children under 5 have over 58,000 accidents on stairs every year in the UK, with larger numbers in the USA (http://www.webmd.com/parenting/news/20120312/child-injured-on-stairs-every-6-minutes). As a result, she designed KiddieRail, a child-friendly height-adjustable handrail systems that grows as the child does.

The tubular handrail is fixed to an existing banister or wall with special mounting brackets that hold the handrail in place. As the child grows up from toddler to pre-schooler and beyond, the handrail can be moved up to be at just the right height. The other clever feature of the mounting brackets is that they can support the handrail at any angle, whether the stairs are steep, shallow or even on a flat landing. If that’s not enough, if the child is holding the rail, they’re not putting sticky hands on wall.

The KiddieRail is expected to go into testing shortly and it’s hoped to be on the market before the end of 2016. The price hasn’t yet been fixed but the team is aiming at less than GB£100 for approximately 3 m (10 feet) of stairs. Duplicator 4K by Blackmagic Design

Imagine being at a conference or wedding with camera crews capturing the event. As you get ready to leave the event, you are given an SD card with the festivities inside for you to consume again and again. That is what the Blackmagic Design Duplicator 4K does.

While at NAB I talked with Kendall with Blackmagic Designs on the Duplicator 4K. You can copy up to 25 cards per rack mount at a time. You can also daisy-chain the units together to record more for larger events.

Each unit can take a SD card and fill it with the event you recorded in multiple formats up to Ultra HD at 2160p 60fps. Each video is encoded in H.265 for smaller file sizes but also 4K resolution.

Weddings, sporting events, live concerts, conferences and more can benefit from the Duplicator 4K. It can also pause and continue to omit breaks in time such as band breaks or moving from wedding to reception.

When video is completed simply pop out each card and hand to the guest. You can even put in a new batch of cards and duplicate another 25 for more guests.

The Duplicator 4K is $1,995 and available now.

Trouble began on the sixth day of the flight, November 17. The capsule developed an atmospheric  leak, the pressure first dropping from 760 to 380 mm of Mercury.  With the drop in cabin pressure all the animal test subjects died.  It would have killed any Cosmonaut not wearing a spacesuit.

For anyone who uses water on a daily basis, knowing the quality of the water is essential. For these people, CleanGrow (http://www.cleangrow.com/) has developed a “laboratory in a suitcase” which is able to analyse six water-based nutrients in one go. Ian from CleanGrow tells me more about it at Gadget Show Live.

Developed for food growers and other industries that need to accurately measure nutrients and ions in water, the Nutrient Analyzer (http://www.cleangrow.com/product/nutrient-analyzer/) measures six different ions at once. Using a top-secret membrane to attract the ions, the analyser detects and quantifies six from calcium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, sodium, ammonium, nitrate and (coming soon) phosphate, before sending the data to an iPhone or iPad. The system is very easy to use – put the water in the bottle, stick the multi-sensor in the bottle and the Analyzer tells you what’s in the water. The sensors can detect from as little as 0.05 ppm to 60,000 ppm with a sample typically taking less than 20 seconds to be analysed.

The CleanGrow system is available now for around GB£2,500.

Sony URXP03D Dual Wireless Receiver Unit

If you wanted to mic up a guest to an interview such as this one, you would need two wireless receivers to do it. Sony is now helping fix that with the UWP-D series wireless mics. The URXP03D is a receiver that not only can connect two wireless sources but also allows for two more inputs for many different operations.

While at NAB 2016, I talked with Andy and learned about all the types of wireless they offer. The UWP-D series includes in-camera adapters and external adapters such as the URXP03D. This receiver is a 4-input, 2 output device. This means you can connect 2 wireless microphones – lavaliere or handheld – and either one or two microphones through the Mic Input (stereo connection). This will give you ability to mic the room and the speakers, then adjust for maximum performance.

The two wireless subjects can be captured on a single or L-R capture. Andy explains the receiver is actually 2 separate receivers in one enclosure. Best part is this is around the same size as a single URX box.

If you run Sony cameras, then the adapter shoe will connect your receiver to the audio without external cables. You can then connect to the shoe and start capturing the subjects.

This dual-receiver wireless will be out in Q3 of 2016. $999 for the URXP03D with combo deals for microphone adapters and lavalieres.
