Nokia Ozo

Capturing 360 video got a whole lot powerful with the Nokia Ozo 360 spherical video and 360×360 surround sound. Everything from creating movies to live broadcasts can now be captured and streamed for all to see instantly.

I got a chance to talk with Guido Voltolina, Head of Presence Capture at Nokia to learn more about this powerful camera. While it looks like some alien pod getting ready to decend on the earth, the Ozo is a 360 camera that can be attached to a stand, drone, or other device to stream and record events. During NAB, Ozo was live streaming in 3 different spots around the convention center.

Not only will the Ozo capture 360 video, the system contains “spatial audio mixing”. Tags are placed on the musicians so as they move, you can hear it in binaural audio. This brings you more into the live event than just watching on a VR headset.

Ozo is expected around Q3 2016 and is priced at $60k. While you won’t be buying one for home use any time soon, you might start seeing them at your favorite events to capture and broadcast. From live concerts to sporting events, conferences and much more.

April 20, 2009: Oracle purchases Sun Microsystems

2009 – Oracle announces they have purchased Sun Microsystems in a $7.4 billion dollar deal. This includes stock at $9.50 / share. That would also be the acquisition of SPARC processors, Solaris OS, Java and MySQL, among other items. The deal would be finalized on January 27th 2010.

Several areas of the UK now charge for plastic grocery bags as a green tax and reusable shopping bags have become very popular. Mind you, carrying round a scrunched up bunch of old bags is never a good fashion statement. Fortunately Ohyo (http://ohyo.me/) has designed a good-looking accessory which morphs from a pouch to a messenger bag before completely opening up as a shopping bag. Participating in the British Inventors’ Project at Gadget Show Live, I chat with Guy from Ohyo about his thing for folding.

Guy and Ohyo has worked with designer Felix Conran (http://felixconran.space/), the grandson of Sir Terence Conran (https://designmuseum.org/designers/terence-conran), to create a flexible bag that changes shape to meet changing needs. The bag can be arranged into four different configurations (http://ohyo.me/ohyo_bag/instructions), a tablet bag, messenger bag, a back-pack and a grocery bag. Available in four colours, the RRP is GB£79, but Ohyo are currently running a Kickstarter campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1813997307/ohyo-bag-2-the-multi-purpose-bag-that-grows-with-y) where you can get in at £59. There’s just two days to go, so get in quick.

Ohyo have a track record in folding things – Guy’s previous invention was a collapsible bottle, which sold over 700,000 units and might be familiar to parents in Britain as it’s been previously sold in Marks and Spencer’s and Boots.

After Scott Carpenter’s science heavy Mercury-Atlas 7 flight, Nasa’s next mission would concentrate on the technical and engineering aspects of space travel.  Mercury Atlas 8 became the third manned orbital flight of the Mercury program. The pilot selected was Walter M. Schirra, Jr., but most people called him Wally…

2000– Before smartphones, Personal Digital Assistants were the device to have. You could store contacts, write memos, set up, read and send email and even play a nice game of Solitaire, or the game where you eliminated color marbles. I – in my IT career – not only had a Palm III, but also ran with an iPAQ 3650, Handspring Visor and Jornada. Well, while this was not the first handheld, we would see a day where many vendors would release the new versions of their devices. It all hovered around Microsoft and their release – the Pocket PC specification: Windows CE 3.0 with mobile IE, Windows Music Player and Mobile Word. Compaq then releases the iPAQ, HP releases the Jornada 545 and Casio introduced the Cassiopeia E-115.

HD DVD format

2006 – Toshiba launches the HD DVD format in the US. The first HD DVD players were the HD-A1 and HD-XA1. RCA would rebrand the A1 to the HDV-5000. The first HD DVD with TrueHD soundtrack was the Phantom of the Opera.

DJI added to their new Osmo 4k stabilization gimbal with the Z-axis attachment. For an additional $129, you can get this for your Osmo. It adds the ability to reduce vertical shaking for a more stable video.

I took the Osmo with Z-Axis for a run and the iPhone video was very solid. Using the joystick to move the camera around, the new Z-axis can keep you moving. It also allows for re-positioning so you can run the camera across the ground or way up high.

While every parent wants to be home to see their children, sometimes work commitments and foreign travel prevent mummies and daddies being there for bedtime stories. Although it can’t give out cuddles, Milo (http://milotoy.co.uk/) is a friendly video messaging system that brings distant parents closer to home. Hannah and Emily take me through their plans for Milo at Gadget Show Live.

Milo is 15cm (6″) high toy lion, with a camera in his mane and a small LCD screen for his face. The idea is that absent parents record messages for the child on the Milo website, whether a good-night message, short story or simple loving reassurance. The child can play the video at bedtime (or other suitable moment) and then respond with a video message of his or her own.

Milo can be provide additional fun through a treasure hunt when Milo’s face shows clues as to the whereabouts of small tokens. Once found, placing them on the lion’s savannah base will trigger a video message reward.

Shown as part of the British Inventors’ Project, Milo (http://milotoy.co.uk/) is still early in its life-cycle though it’s hoped to be on the market within two years at around GB£50.

2000 – Five arial images of Area 51 are leaked onto Terraserver from a Russian satellite called “Sovinformsputnik. The amount of traffic that went to the site brought the server down, so they had to take the photos off until they could handle the traffic.
