Pixar Tin Toy

1982 – The first completely computer animated video wins an Academy Award for best animated short film. “Tin Toy” by Pixar (now a division of Disney) was an animated short film about a toy named Tinny – a one man band – who was being played by an infant named Billy. The short film lasted 5 minutes and cost $300,000 to make.

The short film also won awards at the Seattle International Film Festival, World Animation Celebration, and National Film Registry.

A sequel was in the works, but Tinny was not a popular toy for the kids. Therefore, the film was not made as Pixar concentrated on the movie “Toy Story”.

Three Mile Island Meltdown

1979 – At 4 PM EST, the nuclear reactors in Middletown, PA (Dauphin County) experienced a partial meltdown. The incident was officially rated a 5-of-7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale: Accident with wider consequences.

A stuck open pilot relief valve was to blame for the incident in the primary system. The valve allowed for nuclear reactor coolant to escape into the atmosphere. During the event, the EPA was dispached where they took daily samples of the air to make sure the levels were not harmful to the community.

The evacuation of Middletown was ordered 28 hours later – mostly women and children. Only half of the 663,500 population evacuated within a 20 mile radius.

Is folding your clothes too much of a chore? Are you still waiting for the perfect robot to come along and do the job for you? Well, you are in luck. I mean it isn’t humanoid shaped and won’t carry your clothes around the house, but it’s the next best thing. Folimate is here to make your life easier. And it will fold clothes neater than you ever could.

The company has an improved prototype that is easier to use and it will now fit in any room in the house. So you can put it where it is most convenient for you. You load it like you would load paper in a printer, except you are loading clothes inside. It will take about 25 items in under 5 minutes in a go, which is about a load of laundry.

You put the clothes in the top and they come out in the bottom section freshly folded and looking neat. It does shirts, pants, towels, pillow cases, in sizes from 6 year olds all the way up to XXL.

You could put this device right next to your washer and dryer and make laundry time take a lot less time, which you can use to do other things that are more fun. It’s also ideal to have right next to your closet or dresser since that is where the clothes go when you put them away.

Osumi was the name of the first Japanese satellite placed into orbit. It was named after the Osumi Province in the southern islands of Japan.

Pac-Man Fever

1982 –  Recorded in 1981, the song Pac-Man fever was a song by (Jerry ) Buckner & (Gary) Garcia. Each song on the album was about a different video game and was released via album, cassette, 8-track and later via CD. The song is a parody of “Cat Scratch Fever” by Ted Nugent.

The song itself hit the Bilboard Hot 100 list at #9. Pac-Man fever also earned a gold certification by the RIAA.

The duo had a mini-hit with the song  “Do the Donkey Kong”.

Adding a trigger or two to your acoustic kit can add a lot to your sound. Using that trigger as an additional sound generator can bring a host of accessories with you to the gig. And in the end, you’re still playing acoustic drums. 

Roland TM-1 Hybrid Trigger Module

Enter in the Roland TM-1: This is an addition to your kit. For example, let’s say you want hand claps, or tambourine on your snare hits. This device allows you to get those extra sounds digitally, while you still have your acoustic snare sound.

You can even plug in a couple pads or V-Drums, and use the TM-1 as an addition to your acoustic kit.  

The TM-1 is a 2 input foot-switch drum module. It sits on the floor, like a guitar pedal, so you can easily switch to the next channel. There are 15 ready to play setups, and  you have over 150 sounds, including synth loops, that you can add using the TM-1 Editor for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android (through USB cable). 

Each trigger sound can be adjusted to trigger a loop, beef up a kick sound, change pitch, add or remove decay, change sensitivity (hard hits register and soft ones don’t), and so much more. 

The unit can be run on a 9-volt battery, or through a BOSS PSA adapter. USB Adapter also serves as MIDI for looping, and you have an output (for sound board) and headphone jack to hear your sounds.

Altair 8800

1976 – The First Annual World Altair Computer Convention is held at the Airport Marina Hotel near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bill Gates (http://wikazine.com/Bill_Gates) opens the convention with his position on software piracy.

Of course, it was all about the Altair 8800. MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) was a computer that came in kit form where you could build and improve upon it.
