To Kranz and his team, this crew was special. They just could not lose them.  Failure was not an option.

February 6, 1971: Alan Shepard golfs on the moon

1971 – Moving to the Space side of Geek, Apollo 14 astronaut Alan Shepard hits the first golf ball on the Moon. He used a six-iron attached to a sample collection tool. He hit 2 balls, in which the second would have made Happy Gillmore look bad. Of course, the moon has 1/6 the gravity as the Earth does.

Alan B. Shepard Jr. was also the second person to travel in space and the fifth person to walk on the moon. His Apollo 14 piloting of the lander was deemed the most accurate.

Shepard died in 1998.

I stopped by Arcade1Up to find out the new games that will be coming in 2019. It’s exciting to find out that hits I used to play in the arcades and bars will be in my basement. Not MAME, but full cabinets feeling like they did back when I played them growing up. 

Who is Arcade1Up

This is a company that focuses on game cabinets like the ones you would see at arcades during your childhood. The company makes 3/4 size cabinets, with authentic arcade controls and gameplay. Each cabinet comes with all controls you would see in the arcade, and a 17 inch LCD screen. 

Cabinets come with either arcade series (such as Pac-Man and Pac-Man Plus), or multiple games you can choose from.

At CES 2019, I got to check out the new titles, including Mortal Kombat, Space Invaders, Final Fight, Golden Tee and Karate Champ. I also checked out their Counter-Cade models, and the new hanging wall-cade models. All with the same specs as the cabinets.

February 5, 1999: Victoria’s Secret Webcast drew 1.5 million

1999 – Victoria’s Secret holds their annual fashion show after dealing with the networks for the last 10 years. The event attracts attention – 1.5 million visitors to be exact in 90 countries. The company uses the same idea the next year to rousing success. This was considered the first Major Successful webcast.

Ads were run on Wall Street Journal, New York Times and other print publications. However, it was the ad spot on the Superbowl that would cause the uproar. Within minutes of the commercial airing, 1 million people logged onto the site – causing it to crash. This is pre- iPad or even pre-laptop for most so they had to move to where their computers were. The ad said:

The Broncos won’t be there. The Falcons won’t be there. You won’t care. Victoria’s Secret fashion show LIVE in 72 hours

Because of the number of viewers, many were denied access simply because there wasn’t server space. Something Victoria’s Secret addressed the next year. They went with Akamai for the event.

This also showed that not only that webcasts can be successful, but we are also ushering in a new age of viewing.

Victoria’s Secret went back to Network television in 2001 (ABC). Even though the numbers were good, they didn’t match the 12 million viewers ABC brought to the table.

While at CES, we learned about how Qualcomm is forwarding our auto technology with with Celluar V2x (CV2x). During the Qualcomm press conference, the concept car showed us what our driving experience could be in the future. I sat down with Jeff Dumrauf to find out more about what we saw. 

This is not Autonomous – CV2X is Assisted Driving

Keep in mind, this technology is not to give you a hands-free experience. This is a way to keep your attention on the road. The idea is this is another set of eyes that makes sure you’re not going to get into an accident. It’s also about communicating with other cars to find out where they are going, so your car can help you make a better decision. 

Multi-screen Dashboard

The dash we see in these demos doesn’t really reflect what the car manufacturers might put in their cars. In fact, the demo used Amazon Alexa for connected communication. That will change, depending on what other car companies work with for their connection. 

This vehicle has a full dashboard screen, which also works for the passenger. Two monitors in back for others to enjoy content while driving down the road. But the driver will only see the information they need to keep everyone safe. If they’re not being safe, the car will tell them. 

Staying Attentive While Driving 

Jeff talked about ways the car will help the driver stay attentive. From dashbord notifications, like we saw in the CV2x Demo, to other tangent options, such as vibrating the seats, lights, and more. 

This is not just for drivers, either. A passenger can be notified, so the driver doesn’t have to take their hands off the wheel to nudge someone.

February 4, 1997 – Apple Acquires NeXT Computer

1997 – Apple Computer makes the acquisition of NeXT for $427 million. The OpenStep OS will be the base of Mac OS X. Steve Wozniak returns to Apple as an executive committee member. Gil Amelio – with Steve Jobs as his adviser – makes plans to restructure Apple. Finally, Bill Gates publicly states that he is very interested in continuing to work with Apple.
