Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  It’s a good day for matters of the heart…so we are chatting once again with Dr. Paolo Madeddu at the University of Bristol.  He and his team have discovered a gene mutation among some regional populations where many residents live to be one hundred or more…including his native southern Italy.  And they believe in time…they will be able to provide a way to transfer that genetic mutation to those who need it.  The first human trials are probably two to three years away.  Meanwhile…he points out…the discovery does not mean diet and exercise are any less important..

“So it is also a combination between environment and genes.  You can have good genes but if you don’t eat well, the probability to reach 100 years of age is very low.”

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  Robotic milking,  Fitbit style collars and more are part of modern dairy farming today.  At Barstow’s Longview Farm in Hadley, Massachusetts, part of the Cabot Creamery Cooperative, Denise Barstow Manz is a 7th generation farmer.  She says using technology, the cows can be milked or fed when they choose….strolling into a robotic milker.  They produce more milk and higher quality. And the farm also uses anaerobic digesters that turn food waste and manure into energy that powers not only the farm but the surrounding area as well.  The system also generates the heat used on the farm..

“Eight homes entirely.  So all of us farmers have free hot showers after a long day in the barn, which is really nice.  It’s really lessened our reliance on oil and fossil fuels.”

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  A study published in Cardiovascular Research suggests that a gene variant may be able to turn back the age of your heart by ten years.  The study at the University of Bristol was led by Professor Paolo Madeddu.  On the latest What’s Next, Living Longer, Better, Smarter podcast…he told us the variant, typically found in areas where people often live to 100 or more, could be transferred to you or me via gene therapy…

“So transfer of the gene to allow the good gene to be expressed.  But in the future, we are also considering to use proteins that are encoded with the good gene as a kind of drug that can be administered to the patient.”

Illnesses caused by food are a big concern at Super Bowl gatherings and the USDA is offering tips online to help prevent that.  Meredith Carothers, one of the USDA’s experts says leaving chicken wings or some other types of food out…before the game and then on into the game…can lead to trouble…

“Think of it as like a game clock.  So you have two hours on the clock, you have to make sure you are calling those time outs.  Either put out a smaller portion of foods, swap it out with another portion that is fresh and not going to be unsafe cause it’s been out for too long.”
