  • Fair vehicle subscription service acquiring Ford's Canvas

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.   Fair is the name of a company that lets you use an app to subscribe to a late model used car…and keep it for however long you’d like …with no long term commitment.  Routine maintenance is included and insurance can be bundled in as well.  And now Fair has acquired Canvas…a vehicle subscription company that was launched by Ford a couple of years ago.  Founder and CEO Scott Painter says it gives Fair more customers, engineering talent and a presence in San Francisco…

“It’s a really accretive acquisition for us.  It does a lot for us in terms of increased  momentum, but I think it’s just a reflection of the fact that subscriptions are becoming a real option for consumers that are looking to get a pre-owned vehicle but to do it in a modern way.“

There are plenty of scenarios where it makes sense.  Check out www.fair.com for more.

  • DJI Osmo Action Camera worthy competitor

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  DJI is a company best known for its industry leading drone technology, but one of its latest products is the Osmo Action Camera….aimed squarely at the GoPro crowd.  It is a rugged dual color screen 4K camera…that features plenty of versatility.  There are slow motion and timelapse modes, the image stabilization works very well to take away that shakiness when  your shooting from a bike or hike or doing something even more adventurous.  For stills…there are custom exposure settings…including the ability to take a two minute exposure for capturing the night sky.  The voice control feature is handy as well.  The Osmo Action is priced at 379 dollars and while it may not top GoPro’s Hero 7 in all areas…in our comparisons.. it is a worthy competitor.

  • Apple's new iPhone 11 models arrive

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.   The new iPhone 11 phones are here…in a variety of flavors.  There is the iPhone 11, the 11 Pro and the 11 Pro Max…that adds a 6 and a half inch screen.  The Pro models boast three cameras that will give you the equivalent of four time optical zoom.  And an update coming this fall promises a new artificial intelligence engine to make the camera capabilities even better. Apple CEO Tim Cook…

“Our mission at Apple has always been to design products that empower people and enrich people’s lives.  To put technologies into your hands and to see all the wonderful things that you’ll do with them.”

Apple is hoping the new models using the updated A13 Bionic processor will give sales a much needed lift.   You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.

  • Liftid offers neurostimulation for attention & focus without caffeine

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  Instead of more caffeine to help make you more alert…RPW Technology says mild electrical stimulation can do the trick.  It makes a device called Liftid that looks like a pair of goggles that you wear for twenty minutes a day on your forehead…

“There are two electrodes that are in a specific area on the top of the forehead that deal with cognitive benefit.”

Company partner Ken Davidov.  Neurosurgeon Ted Schwartz, also on the team, says the science is real…

“In theory if you’re performing a task where you need to be very focused and very alert, by wearing the device twenty minutes a day, may increase and has been shown in these studies to increase, your alertness and your focus and  attention.”

I’m typically skeptical…but so far so good…in testing it out. Find more at www.getliftid.com.

  • Hands on with Samsung's Galaxy Note 10+

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  After spending some time with Samsung’s latest flagship phone, the Galaxy Note 10 plus,  it is clear that the S pen is the key differentiator…and that the new added remote control functions developed for it…make the pen more useful than ever.  And it is great that Samsung is allowing third parties to make use of the S pen too.  On top of that…there’s a huge 6.8 inch vibrant screen…even the word vibrant doesn’t do it justice… powered by a larger battery that can keep you going all day long and there have been some camera improvements, especially on the video side.  I’m not happy that there is no longer a headphone jack, but the ability to expand storage with a microSD card is still there.  As you might expect…all of the high end features here…carry a high end price tag of 11 hundred dollars.  You can often do better keeping an eye out for carrier deals.
