Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.   I’m Fred Fishkin.       A little computer inside a golf ball?.   It is the next evolution from OnCore Golf where CEO Bret Blakely  has done lots of innovating with golf tech before.  And now, he says, comes the Genius ball…

“And it is a ball with magnetometers, gyroscopes, accelerometers, all inside on a small computer chip that will be providing all sorts of incredible data for putting.  It will be initially starting off as a putting ball.  It will tell you spin axis and distance and accuracy.”

Lots of engineering challenges here.   The Genius Ball will arrive this year, probably for about 200 dollars a sleeve..  Meanwhile…check out the rest of the line up at OnCoreGolf.com.

  • Lutron out with DIY Caseta Smart Shades

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.   We’ve been fans of Lutron and their reliable smart home gear for some time and now there’s even more to cheer about with the arrival of Caseta smart shades.   They are lower priced that the company’s Serena line…and are designed to be do it yourself.  You just need to take care with the measuring and the rest of the installation and set up is pretty straight forward.  They work with Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home and more and you can set opening and closing schedules for different times of day.  Caseta Marketing Manager Damon Williams..

“One thing that we know people really enjoy is waking up to that natural sunlight.  So if you need to wake up at 7 or 8 o’clock in the morning…you can set your shades to open up to act as a natural alarm clock.”

  • POP month recognizes advances and professions in prosthetics and more

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.    POP month is an effort to recognize and attract more people into professions that improve people’s lives through prosthetics, orthotics and pedorthics.   At the American Board for Certification,  Steve Fletcher is director of professional credentialing..

“The technology side of our profession has really exploded.  It has just enhanced and increased significantly.  A couple examples that people may have heard of is 3D printing.  We call that additive manufacturing.  But it’s a whole new way of fabricating a device that can be made extremely custom to an individual person’s needs.”

And of course, robotics and exoskeletons are bringing even more sophisticated tech into the fields as well.    More info… head to PopMonth.org.

  • AI in toys for kids? Just wait.

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. Toy makers and retailers gathered again this month for the big American International Toy Fair in New York and among the hottest trends were toys and games that blend the past and present. Crayola has been a leader there…and of course there’s Lego. What about AI in toys. Chris Byrne…author and toy expert…they call him The Toy Guy… tells us..

“Where it’s influencing the toy industry is helping in design, but it hasn’t really filtered down to toys yet. One of the reasons is even though it works, it’s still very expensive. So we’re looking at 2026 and 2027 to start to see AI powered toys because people believe that the prices will have come down by that time. And again, AI makes sense if it enhances the play experience because that’s really what it’s all about.”
