  • The Brava Smart Oven keeps improving with over the air updates

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.   I’m Fred Fishkin.    We have become fans of the smart Brava oven that is connected and can cook almost anything, efficiently, with light.  And the latest update from the company adds accessibility for the visually impaired and more.  Director of Product Management Zac Selmon and the team have worked with the Lighthouse organization in San Francisco to bring full control of the oven to the Brava mobile app..

“Now we can tie in with accessibility tools like voice over and talk back on iOS and Android, which are screen readers so that people that are blind or low vision can use the screen readers on their phone, make all their selections, get all their instructions and then set up their cook on a cold tray, put it into a cold oven and control it entirely that way.”

And the technology will enable more voice control in the not too distant future.   More on the Brava oven in episodes to come.

  • Find those deals...but avoid the scams and fraud

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. We all want to grab those deals that are out there…but be careful. Four out of five American consumers have encountered some type of fraud this year. AARP Fraud Watch Network director of programs Kathy Stokes says it is not a good idea to make a purchase through an ad on social media..

“Half of us go with that ad and purchase something but a third of us experience fraud doing that.” Gift cards, I understand, which are so popular, what should we be watching out for there? “The highest amount of people, 30 percent this time, said that they have either given or received a gift card with no value on it.”

Stokes was a guest on the What’s Next Living Longer Better Smarter podcast. You can find more on fraud prevention and get assistance at AARP.org.

  • BrainHQ app for gifting or for yourself- at any age

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. A gift of sharpness. No we’re not talking about a new knife set. We’re talking about an app…BrainHQ from Posit Science. The science backed exercises are focused on your vision, hearing and overall sharpness. Co-founder and neuroscientist Henry Mahncke..

“You know I still talk to people who tell me I’m just not good at math. None of that’s really true. And so what BrainHQ is designed to do, specifically, is to provide brain training exercises that make the brain faster and more accurate and then, as a result, help people improve things like their attention and their speed.”

Some of the exercises are free for you to try…and I’ve found a subscription very worthwhile. It costs fourteen dollars a month or 96 dollars a year…and can make a great gift for people of almost any age.

  • Amidst allergies and special diets- how to cook for a crowd

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. With families gathering for Thanksgiving and lots more to come….cooking for a crowd is becoming much more challenging. Food allergies and specialized diets can be difficult. Chef and author Dustin Hardin, working with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has helped to gather recipes that avoid the most common issues at UniversalMeals.org..

“So you really can create a space for everyone at the table. You think you’re going over to a friend’s house, a family member’s house, you don’t know who is going to be there, what allergies they have. It’s really nice when you can show up with something and feed everyone. You’re like, no, they can have it, they can have it, they can have it, everyone can enjoy it together, right? Something like green bean casserole, nobody really know.”

Even a tasty dairy free mac and cheese is there. The site again is UniversalMeals.org.
