The Freedmen's Bureau, officially known as the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, was established in 1865 to assist formerly enslaved people in the South during the Reconstruction era. It provided food, medical care, education, and legal support to help freedmen transition to freedom and self-sufficiency until its dissolution in 1872.
