Phone calls haven’t changed much in nearly a century. We still face long wait times. As Gustaf Alströmer from YCombinator put it, we encounter confusing IVRs. There’s also the need to “press star or pound.” But that’s starting to change. Voice AI powered by advanced language models is now so good, it feels like talking to a human. It’s a glimpse into the future. To scale this future globally, voice AI companies need telecom infrastructure that’s just as fast, flexible, and intelligent.
Voice AI startups have a mission. They aim to revolutionize how businesses interact with customers. They power intelligent IVRs, virtual agents, and real-time messaging. But building a smart voice AI application is only half the challenge. To operate globally, you need telecom infrastructure that scales fast, works reliably, and keeps costs predictable.
This guide explores the key telecom challenges Voice AI startups face. It also explains how TelecomsXChange (TCXC) powered exchange platforms help API-first companies like VAPI connect globally in minutes, not months.
Every Voice AI product relies on a telecom backbone to function effectively. At a minimum, you need:
Traditionally, accessing these services across countries means months of paperwork, carrier negotiations, and unpredictable costs. That’s time and money most startups don’t have.
Platforms powered by TCXC remove that complexity. You don’t need to stitch together fragmented carrier relationships anymore. Instantly access hundreds of vetted global telecom providers via a single API and commercial agreement.
Thanks to wholesale pricing plus per‑second billing, you can see total cost savings in the 40–60% range. Savings depend on your average call length and destination.
More savings = more resources to funnel into AI‑agent innovation, UX improvements, and customer growth.
This flexibility gives Voice AI teams a competitive edge—enabling fast experimentation, faster rollouts , and global reach. With a simple script, you can auto-select routes based on target price. You can also select routes based on quality. Then, instantly interconnect via SIP. No manual back-and-forth is required.
TCXC-powered platforms are designed to grow with your use cases. They cater to both small IVR startups and enterprise-grade AI assistants. This applies whether you’re serving one region or the entire world.
One Voice AI provider used a tcxc powered marketplace to expand their IVR and messaging services into 15 countries—within hours, they:

There was one clear message across ITW 2025: Telcos need to figure out who they are — are they infrastructure providers, tech companies, or platform enablers?
To stay relevant, telcos have to start thinking differently. They need to invest in programmable, developer-friendly platforms that support automation, make integration easier, and give room for others to innovate. APIs aren’t just backend plumbing anymore — they’re how services get built, delivered, and monetized.
At TelecomsXChange (TCXC), we’ve believed this since ITW 2016, where we shared that view with execs from Verizon, Telefónica, and others. We’ve stayed consistent: telcos should double down on their strengths — infrastructure, regulation, and uptime — and let others build the next layer of value on top.
This year, a few key takeaways stood out.
The CAMARA API initiative has good intentions — a common framework across carriers. But real-world adoption is slow and inconsistent. Each operator is doing their own flavor of CAMARA, and that defeats the point.
More importantly, the roadmap isn’t being shaped by developers. It’s still telcos steering the ship, often with legacy thinking.
The real need? Developer experience. Whether it’s CAMARA, GSMA Open Gateway, or your own APIs — what matters is: can developers actually use it easily?
Look at Twilio and Nexmo. They didn’t wait for industry-wide standards. They just built APIs that worked and made developers productive.
Most of the API efforts in telecom today are focused on enterprise use cases — voice bots, 2FA, messaging, etc. But wholesale, which still drives a big chunk of revenue, is often left out.
There’s no shared API approach yet for basic wholesale needs — things like:
At TCXC, we’ve built exactly that: a programmable layer that gives telcos a single wallet, one agreement, and a unified API to resell voice, messaging, and numbers.
This isn’t theory — it’s working in production.
What’s more, there’s still a big divide between data wholesale and traditional telecom wholesale. Different teams, systems, and mental models. We believe that wall needs to come down — and we’re building toward that.
Some telcos are trying to solve this by buying startups. Others are trying to build software in-house. But both routes are hard.
Acquisitions often fail because the startup ends up being run like the telco — slow processes, too much structure, culture mismatch.
Building from within? Even harder. Not just because of tech, but because of mindset. Telcos are built for stability and risk management. Tech companies thrive on speed, iteration, and occasional chaos.
It’s not a talent problem. It’s a DNA problem.
There’s a better option: collaboration. Communities like TADHack show how telcos and developers can create together. Don’t control innovation — enable it.
Telcos don’t need to reinvent themselves as tech companies. What they do need is to open up their infrastructure in a clean, secure, and scalable way.
Focus on what you’re great at:
And let developers, startups, and partners build the rest.
Think about what the App Store did for mobile. That’s the kind of opportunity telcos have right now — to become the foundation others build on.
Be the platform. Let the innovation happen around you.

In an earlier blog post, we introduced Open Text Shield (OTS) as a free, AI-powered SMS firewall designed to go beyond traditional rule-based filtering systems. With OTS, communication service providers (CSPs) can protect their networks across multiple messaging platforms such as SMS, email, and RCS. As spam, phishing, and scam attempts increase, the need for real-time, AI-driven solutions is becoming crucial.
Building on the success of that post, we’re excited to share how the latest OTS and SMPP protocol integration enhances your SMS firewall by not only blocking phishing attempts in real time but also generating revenue from scammers—without sending the harmful content to subscribers.
What if you stop SMS scammers in their tracks while monetizing their failed phishing attempts? This is exactly what OTS does when integrated with the SMPP protocol. With this powerful combination, phishing messages are identified instantly, blocked from reaching subscribers, and the scammer is charged for the attempt—boosting CSP revenue in the process.
Let’s take a real example from an SMPP integration powered by OTS.
A phishing message arrives:
“Urgent! Your bank account has been compromised. Click here to secure it now: http://bit.ly/73737373a”
The result? DING DING —scammers pay, subscribers stay protected, and CSPs profit.
Traditional SMS firewalls rely on static rules that can’t keep up with the constantly evolving tactics of phishers and scammers. OTS, with its AI-driven capabilities, addresses these limitations by learning from new threats and adapting in real-time.
Here’s why OTS is the future of SMS firewalls:
OTS was built with flexibility in mind. Whether you’re using SMPP, SIP, RCS, or SMTP, OTS seamlessly integrates into your existing infrastructure. This makes it the perfect companion for any SMS firewall strategy.
Deploy in Two Commands:
Try the Cloud-Hosted OTS API:
If you’re relying solely on a traditional SMS firewall, it’s time to consider OTS as either a complement or a replacement. With its AI-driven content analysis and real-time threat detection, OTS ensures your network stays secure from the ever-evolving tactics of scammers.
Key Features of OTS:
As phishing and spam attacks become more sophisticated, traditional SMS firewalls can no longer keep up. OTS, integrated with SMPP, offers a future-proof solution for CSPs. Not only do you protect your subscribers, but you also capitalize on failed phishing attempts to increase revenue.
Start using OTS today and experience the power of real-time, AI-powered protection that also boosts your revenue.

The integration of OTS with your SMS firewall not only enhances security but also monetizes scammers in real time. By using advanced AI, real-time analysis, and easy integration with existing systems like SMPP, you can safeguard your network while increasing profitability.
Don’t settle for outdated SMS firewalls—upgrade to OTS today and stay ahead of modern-day threats.
