Tom's cousin Dan arrives for the Christmas holidays. He finds it hard to believe Tom's stories about a trip through the Grandfather Clock to Yngerlande, but begins to change his mind when mysterious coloured baubles appear in their room in the middle of the night.
Still troubled by what he saw on his visit to Yngerlande, Tom is back in Runswick Bay, England in the present day. He visits The Crab and Lobster in the village and discovers clues from the past. Back at The Rectory, a message is waiting for him
After surviving the wolf attack on the moors, Tom and Silas make it back to the safety of The Rectory in Runswick Bay. Silas answers many of Tom's questions, but the biggest question is left unanswered as he returns to England through the Grandfather Clock.
Silas meets Tom at the White Lion in Whitby and takes him back to the Rectory in Runswick Bay. On the journey, in wild and wintry countryside, their carriage is attacked by a ravenous pack of wolves. Tom discovers some of his new powers for the first time.

His cover story is that he is an orphan from Corams Field in London on his way to Runswick Bay to be apprenticed as a Doctor in the Reverend Silas Cummerbund's Rectory. He encounters some "persons of interest" before starting his journey
