What happens when you achieve your dreams and finally walk one of Australia’s biggest runways, only to look around and find yourself unique in the worst possible way? Is your presence enough to shake the table, or is it time we built a new one?
Basjia Almaan is a Black, Queer, curve model who recently walked in Australian Fashion Week in Sydney, an event which she publicly criticised for its lack of diversity in a now viral post. Join her and host Sunny Adcock as they call the fashion industry to a higher standard and identify the difference between tokenism and genuine diversity. Basjia lays bare her experiences of adversity on her road to belonging and self actualisation, and asks us to consider why the inclusion of light-skinned, barely curvy models comes at the cost of representing larger and darker bodies. Is it time we divest entirely from these conservative institutions? Grab a cup for the piping hot tea as we embark on our most audacious, tenderly outrageous installment yet.
