  • Conversations: Dave Hughes
Most people who have been fly-fishing for sometime will probably recognize the name Dave Hughes. Yet, they are likely not aware that the illustrious author of over 20 fly-fishing books and uncountable articles has been practicing tenkara for many years. In this conversation (forgive us for the sound quality, it was done in a noisy area with Daniel's little travel recorder), Dave Hughes and Daniel chat about Dave's experience with tenkara and all the things that go with it.

  • Wading Safety
My first time wearing waders almost ended up tragically. I had no idea there were some fundamental things to know about wading. Waders keep us dry and warm. They make more waters seem accessible. And, wading in waders definitely makes it look like we are partaking in the sport.
But, wading presents some real risks. There are a few things everyone should be aware of before they put on waders for the first time. In this episode I discuss a few of those risks and how to stay safe.

  • Big Rivers, Long Lines
Tenkara does not mean small stream and short-line fishing. One of the important tools in the quiver of a tenkara angler is the ability to use long lines and knowing that big waters can be fished effectively with a tenkara rod, line and fly.
In this episode Daniel introduces the idea and some of the techniques used while fishing big waters with tenkara.

In this episode Daniel talks about his experiences with trying to stay warm while fly-fishing in winter time.

  • Choosing a tenkara rod, tenkara line and tenkara flies
Even with something as simple as tenkara, choosing your first tenkara rod may seem daunting. There are decisions to be made in terms of fish targeted and waters fished. In this episode, Daniel will walk you through the lineup of tenkara rods, tenkara lines and tenkara flies offered by Tenkara USA to help you choose your first tenkara rod.
Hint: if you are having a hard time choosing, just get the adjustable Sato rod by Tenkara USA, it is ultra-light, covers the main lengths of tenkara rods, and will be a versatile rod in small and large waters alike.
    Referenced in this episode:
Rhodo, adjustable 8’10”/ 9’9”/10’6”, the shortest tenkara rod is ideal for tight streams: http://www.tenkarausa.com/shop/product_info.php/products_id/165
Sato, adjustable 10’8”/ 11’10”/12’9”, probably the most versatile, our usual recommendation: http://www.tenkarausa.com/shop/product_info.php/products_id/167

  • Interview With John Gierach
Few writers in the realm of fly-fishing have achieved the iconic status of John Gierach. One of the great honors of my career has been to have piqued Gierach's interest in tenkara, and then to fish with him on a few occasions. Last year he released his latest book, All Fishermen are Liars, I'm still debating whether the inclusion in a book with this title is something of which to be proud...but I guess I am. John and I sat down last year to have a conversation about his experiences with tenkara . We put out the video you can see on the link: http://www.tenkarausa.com/john-gierach-talks-tenkara-all-fishermen-are-liars/. Since that interview several people asked us to release the full interview, and the podcast is a great medium for that. So, here is our unabridged conversation...except for a couple of small cuts for when we got too distracted by his cute cats.
