This is episode 6 in a series of at least ten shows devoted to the impact on civil liberties of laws passed since 9/11/2001 to enhance national security. During this series, Attorney Donna M. Adler leads us chronologically from the events of September 11th and the 9/11 Commission Report through several major pieces of legislation, such as the Homeland Security Act, the Patriot Act, Patriot II, the Military Commissions Act, and a number of laws directed to enhancing that national capacity to fight terrorism. Today we continue discussing:(a) what the U.S. knew about Al Qaeda as it was becoming prominent and what we tried to do about it; (b) failures of intergovernmental cooperation concerning the knowledge we had that contributed to our vulnerability on 9/11; (c) the recommendations that the 9/11 Commission made in light of the Commission’s findings; and a discussion of legislation.

DesBarres and his wife Amanda are owners of Help Unlimited, Inc, a daily money management firm serving senior citizens and the disabled in the mid-Atlantic.  Chris served for six years as a counterintelligence officer with the Department of Defense, where he directed an inter-agency program combating terrorism.  He deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and from 2007-2009 served on the staff of the National Security Council for Presidents Bush and Obama.  Chris obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and his MBA at Wake Forest University.  He is the chairman of the Southeast Chapter of the AADMM and he is an American Red Cross volunteer.

As the holidays approach, law enforcement agencies are stepping up their efforts in enforcement of laws against intoxicated motorists.  It’s important to remember that “buzzed” driving is drunk driving.  In an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related traffic accidents, many municipalities will set up Roadside Safety Checks this holiday season.  This program is designed to give an introduction of what to expect if you find yourself at a Roadside Safety Check, the laws surrounding Roadside Safety Checks, and steps to take if you are arrested as a result of a roadside safety check.  Today we will talk about proceeding through a roadside check and the applicable laws in Illinois, as well as some tips if you are arrested for DUI this holiday season.
