I'm Speaking...with Elizabeth West

Thank You Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. *Re-release*

Listen Later

Hello lovelies! Thanks for listening (and reading!)

This is a re-run or a re-release (as I like to call them). I released this episode a couple of years ago (in January of 2024).

This year in the US, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is on Monday, January 19, 2026.

...Being a woman of color, I've always had gratitude for growing up after the Civil Rights Act and after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech.

The generation before me did *not get that same 'treatment' and I know I am so lucky and blessed to get it.

Things like not having to go to sit at the back of the bus or giving up my seat on the bus to not getting served at restaurants to not being able to use the same restroom as others!

What's sad is that a lot of these 'freedoms' are now being dismantled and taken away..things like Affirmative Action to today's DEIA programs to gerrymandering in certain states.

Here's the Summary per Otter below:

Elizabeth West discusses the significance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. She highlights the overturning of these laws by the U.S. Supreme Court in recent years, expressing concern about regressive movements. West emphasizes the historical context of Jim Crow laws, which enforced racial segregation, and the impact of the Civil Rights Act in ending legal segregation and securing equal access to public facilities. She reflects on the personal freedoms she enjoys due to these legislative changes and encourages gratitude for the progress made in civil rights.

Here are the transcripts per Otter!
