  • Religious Robots: Part 1
Monday evening session of our Behind The Mask: Breaking Free From Performative Religion teaching sessions presented by Dr. Rand Hummel in conjunction with our 2026 VBS program, Secret Agent Academy The sermon warns against the danger of becoming a 'religious robot' by performing spiritual duties out of habit, pride, or a desire for human approval rather than genuine love. It highlights the hypocrisy of outwardly appearing righteous while harboring sin internally and urges believers to examine their hearts honestly before God. The speaker emphasizes that true faith is not earned through religious performance but received through grace, contrasting the Pharisee's self-righteousness with reliance on Christ's sacrifice. A significant portion focuses on correcting mechanical prayer habits, advocating for sincere, personal communication with the Father instead of using vain repetitions or formulaic phrases. Ultimately, the message calls for an authentic relationship with God characterized by dependence, thanksgiving, and a rejection of superficial religiosity.

  • The Cross of Christ
Heidelberg Catechism Lord's Day 16 40. Why was it necessary for Christ to humble himself even "unto death"? Because with respect to the justice and truth of God, satisfaction for our sins could be made no otherwise, than by the death of the Son of God. 41. Why was he also "buried"? Thereby to prove that he was really dead. 42. Since then Christ died for us, why must we also die? Our death is not a satisfaction for our sins, but only an abolishing of sin, and a passage into eternal life. 43. What further benefit do we receive from the sacrifice and death of Christ on the cross? That by virtue thereof, our old man is crucified, dead and buried with him; that so the corrupt inclinations of the flesh may no more reign in us; but that we may offer ourselves unto him a sacrifice of thanksgiving. 44. Why is there added, "he descended into hell"? That in my greatest temptations, I may be assured, and wholly comfort myself in this, that my Lord Jesus Christ, by his inexpressible anguish, pains, terrors, and hellish agonies, in which he was plunged during all his sufferings, but especially on the cross, has delivered me from the anguish and torments of hell.

  • Created and Redeemed to Worship
Pastor Mark Hogan teaches on the biblical purpose of worship, arguing that humanity was created and redeemed to be worshipers of God. He grounds this in the Westminster Shorter Catechism's answer that man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever, and he defines religious worship as both homage to God and enjoyment of Him as our highest good. Hogan expounds Psalm 95:6, Psalm 100, and Psalm 139:13-14 to show that worship is the proper response to creation, and he uses Romans 1:21-25 to demonstrate that fallen humanity misdirects worship toward idols, which is the root of all sin. He then turns to 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 and Hebrews 9:14 to argue that redemption in Christ restores believers to their original purpose of serving the living God. In Ephesians 1:3-14, he highlights the refrain "to the praise of his glory" as the goal of salvation, and in 1 Peter 2:9-10, he shows that believers are made a royal priesthood to proclaim God's praises. Finally, in Revelation 4-5, Hogan contrasts worship for creation (Revelation 4:11) with worship for redemption (Revelation 5:9-12), showing that all history moves toward universal praise of God and the Lamb. He applies this by urging believers to approach public worship as the summit of their chief end, entering with thanksgiving and praise, and to live all of life to God's glory.
