Brian tells us about some brilliant, but well hidden, government funded upskilling programmes particularly in his own fintech area. He found his course by chance but is now spreading the love, and knowledge about them, on That Great Business Show.

Like so many, Brian was not a university graduate and despite his experience he was turned down flat for some jobs. He explains how he navigated his way around that deficit and why employers, should or must, recognise 'on the job training, or apprenticeship training as it used to be called, if those employers want to find the best talent.

Three Irish women, Jenny O'Connell, Louise O'Riordan and Aoife Matthews, based in different countries, selling their high-end women’s health supplement to the world. Developed solely with the female in mind, because women are not small men – is what they say. And, unbelievably, women were only included in clinical trials only from 1993 onward. And it wasn't until 2022 that complete female anatomy model was created (yes, we thought this was a mistake, but no, it's true.) They're raising funds with a view to expanding into the US (particularly interested in women investors), where they're also planning to manufacture their supplement.

Conor Kelly has been working, working, working since he was...very young. A milk round made him the wealthiest of his young teen peers. DJ'ing and Ikea sent him through college in Dublin. A natty Covid invention got him to his Masters in London. He created a Gmail extension but (wisely?) cut it when he realised no one would pay for it. A chance meeting with the founder of Humanloop landed him a job in twenty minutes...Meanwhile he has created Taxbot.ie, an AI bot that will help pay your taxes. BTW, Conor is still only 25. What a story!

Maria Dickenson has been boss at 'dedicated' book chain Dubray for seven years. In that time she has doubled the size of her Eason owned business, despite the challenges from Amazon, Kindle, Audiobooks, Covid...(is there anything else out there to throw at her??). She's convinced the Irish love affair with the printed word, on paper, will continue. The enthusiasm of her staff for books is integral to Dubray's books, but it's not always easy to find the right team member.

They're hyper efficient, holding their management meetings in the car as they travel. A great tip they have to expand into Northern Ireland was to use Intertrade Ireland for lead generation.

OneSonic - engineer and former professional musician David Cawley is founder of Ireland's only audio tech brand, OneSonic, made in China, sold from Finglas, Ireland. He has big ambitions for his brand, expanding into the US, so he's raising €5m in funds from Crowdcube as well as from VCs and hopes to tap into the Irish diaspora in the US to get traction in that vast market.

Parch, the no-booze booze, based in the US, co-founded by Ila Byrne, former Diageo 'head of ideation', now shipping across the US. She's one the 'Women Running the Liquor World' according to Forbes. She gives us a particularly interesting factoid about the Japanese drinks market where the government is actively trying to grow consumption. She has just closed her 'friends and family' funding around with more to come in 2024.

Unfortunately, she doesn't see a huge opportunity for her brand in her native Ireland.
