  • Joy-ing: My journey in reflecting, redefining, and doing joy.
Have you ever wondered why others seem to be smiling more frequently, laughing more deeply, or having more fun than you? If you recall the first episode, I described one of the biggest indicators of my burn out was my loss of joy. I didn’t see how hustling, achieving, and being productive could occur alongside joy. As I sat in deeper reflection this year, it became clear that joy had been something that seemed out of reach for most of my life. I had started to convince myself that joy wasn’t for me. I didn’t understand it, I was envious of those who seemed to be experiencing it, and yet I wondered if true joy was actually real. Listen in as I share what I have discovered about joy, my new definition, and how I’m doing it every single day!

  • Will I Have to Lay on a Couch: Demystifying the counseling experience with Dr. Michelle Ghoston.
Will I have to lay on the couch? Will my therapist just tell me what to do? What if the clinician and I don’t “click?” If I go to counseling, does it mean I am “crazy?” Our mental health is important, especially right now when so much of our life feels a bit off course, disrupted, or unpredictable. In honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, I talk with Dr. Michelle Ghoston, Assistant Professor and Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, to demystify the counseling process and experience, highlight the importance of strengthening and attending to our mental health, and validate the human experience in the midst of multiple pandemics.
Dr. Ghoston is an Assistant Professor at Wake Forest University where she educates future mental health counselors. Her research is anchored in Social Justice and Equity; Cultural Competence and Awareness; Neuroscience; and Threat Assessment. She is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and has a private practice.

  • Watch your language!
    Episode Short Description:
Who’s feeling the stress? Online work and school got you feeling overwhelmed? You, too? When we are feeling stressed, we don’t always think before we speak and we may unintentionally hurt, criticize, or minimize ourselves and others. In this week’s episode, Addy shares 4 words/phrases, in addition to the nonveral language, that keep us stuck and wasting our precious head and heart energy. Our language and word choice are so powerful and something we have control over (doesn’t some control sound nice right now?). Let’s learn to watch our language and be choosy with our words in an effort to live life more joyfully!

  • Finding joy in your health and fitness journey with Michelle Clark
I don’t know about you but working out hasn’t always been something I enjoy. Especially working out in public. No. Never. Not for me. I was too insecure about my gym outfit, knowledge of the gym equipment (what do all those machines really do?), and body. All of this coupled with mixed messages of what to eat - who knew some people refer to bananas as “sugar sticks,” I just didn’t think working out and feeling good in this way was for me. In this episode, Michelle Clark, my friend and gym owner debunks some myths, teaches us a different way to consider health and fitness, and inspires us to make little steps. And, guess what, you don’t have to wear matching gym clothes or understand all those machines... She’s the real deal and is here to help us out!
Michelle is a coach and Co-owner of Deliberate Strength. As a Division I college athlete, a basketball player at Gonzaga University, sports and training has always been a part of Michelle’s life. Michelle was hired as an assistant coach after graduating and continued her studies earning a Master’s Degree in School Counseling. She loves developing relationships with people and fostering an environment of personal growth. She says, “ We want Deliberate Strength to be that place for people to come and feel uplifted in whatever it is they are trying to achieve."
