I've wanted to speak to Hazel since I first heard she got the job as the City of Winnipeg Director of Planning Property and Development. How often do we have women in these kinds of roles? In today’s episode Hazel talks about, yes, walkable cities, but more than just that. She talks about a city that’s good for women and good for everyone. When people have options to walk, bike, roll, ski, sled and even drive, the city becomes more lively and safer for everyone.

In this episode we touch on the challenges and opportunities in implementing zoning reforms and the significance of making cities more inclusive and accessible for all residents, particularly women and caregivers.

Hazel emphasizes the need for community involvement in urban planning and the importance of creating spaces that are not only functional but also foster a sense of belonging. In this week’s episode, I speak with activist turned city councillor, Renata Falzoni. Our conversation was long overdue. I have been a huge fan of Renata’s for many years, pretty much since the start of my cycling journey, before advocacy was even on my radar. I admire her tenacity and drive, still going strong at the age of 72, entering what she calls her 10th childhood.

We had a lot to talk about and had to leave some things on the edit room floor. And yet, here we are with a super long episode! Take your time and split it between this week and next if you must, but make sure to listen to the whole thing.

Renata talked about an Inter-Park trail that was just about to be inaugurated when we talked, and here it is for all to see! 

She also went to COP30 where she was received like the celebrity she is and talked about the Amazon trail here.

Today’s conversation with Tara shifts us away from bikes for a minute, but fear not, there’s still a lot of bike talk in here, because, as you know by now, I can’t shut up about bikes and bikes really are the answer to everything.

Tara Johnson shares her journey of founding Freedom Tree, a nonprofit organization focused on reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in Sierra Leone and Alberta. She discusses the importance of education, community involvement, and addressing cultural practices that affect women's health. Tara also reflects on the impact of colonialism on patriarchy and women's roles in society, emphasizing the need for collaboration between men and women in health initiatives. Tara also shares how her faith and love for biking have shaped her life and advocacy.

Tissa and her husband Fernando created a Social Enterprise, Bicicletaria Cultural (https://bicicletariacultural.wordpress.com/) ,where cyclists can park their bikes safely while at work or school, can have meetings, work and get their bikes worked on while they wait. They have won awards all over the world and continue to impact their community.

In today’s episode, I talk with Yasmina Ahl Maris, bicycle mayor of Marrakech. I met Yasmina through BYCS, the Bicycle Mayor Network, and I became extremely interested in how she transitioned from riding her bike to school to bikepacking alone along the Atlas Mountains at the age of 22.

Yasmina discusses the challenges she faced, as well as the community that supported her from the beginning to the end. She made new friends on the road and had the most unexpected encounters. Her journey of advocacy is one of empowerment, of helping women believe in themselves and take a chance on adventure.
