The 17 Verses Podcast: Distilling the Qur'an One Day at a Time

Today's selection consists of two short Surahs. The first is Surah 102, At-Takãthur or The Piling Up. This Surah gives a warning against piling up material wealth or temporal power rather than pursuing the higher spiritual rewards in life. Tafseer for this Surah talks about the three kinds of yaqin (certainty of knowledge) in verse 5. 

The second is Surah 103, Al-‘Asr or Time Through the Ages. This Surah reminds us that history shows that Evil comes to an evil end and time is always in favor of those who have Faith. Tafseer for this Surah concerns the meaning of the Surah's name and its significance.

Today's selection concludes Surah 13, Ar-Ra'd or The Thunder, verses 38-43. These verses discuss the Messengers of God and the powers they do and don't possess. When God commands, there is no reversing it for God is the Master of all planning.

Today's selection concludes Surah 41, Fussilât (or Expounded), verses 33-54. This selection starts by praising those who call others towards God, do good deeds and declares their submission to Allah. Next are some examples of Allah's signs. Lastly, nothing has been revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) which was not said to prior Messengers and it is affirmed that the holy book given to Prophet Moses (pbuh) (the Torah) was similar to the Qur'an.

Today's selection is the entirety of Surah 94, Al-Inshirãh or the Expansion of the Breast. This Surah gives a message of hope and encouragement is a time of darkness and difficultry. It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) soon after the last Surah (Adh Duha), whose argument it supplements. 

Tafseer for this Surah explains the metaphor for which the breast is used.

Today's selection is from Surah 16, An-Nahl or the Bees, verses 90-110. These verses discuss the good deeds which Allah commands and the evil which he forbids. What is with you is transitory and what is with Allah is everlasting. Unbelievers accused Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) of learning the Qur'an from another man but that man was a non-Arab while the Qur'an was revealed in Arabic.

Today's selection concludes Surah 17, Al-Isrâ or the Night Journey, verses 94-111. In this selection, we are told that God sent a human messenger to humans, just as he would've sent an angel messenger if the dwellers of Earth were angels. Only disbelievers doubt life after death. Moses, himself, was given nine signs but people didn't believe him. Now, the Qur'an has been revealed in section to suit each occasion. Lastly, we are counseled to offer Prayers in a moderate voice, neither too loud, nor too soft.
