The 17 Verses Podcast: Distilling the Qur'an One Day at a Time

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Today's selection is from Surah 37, As-Sãffãt or Those Ranged in Ranks, verses 22-39. These verses recount a scene from the Day of Judgment and a 'treat' for the wrongdoers. There is a dialogue between the followers and the leaders who misled them.

Tafseer for this selection is a clarification of the first verse, which names the spouses of the wrongdoers as also subject to punishment.

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Today's selection is from Surah 37, As-Sãffãt or Those Ranged in Ranks, verses 1-21. Verses 1-11 deal with the oneness of God as well as the proposition that Satan (shaitan) will not prevail and cannot even hear the chorus of Angels. Verses 12-21 deal with the disbelief of the unbelievers at the prospect of being brought back to life on the Day of Judgment.

This is a re-release of a bonus episode of the 17 Verses podcast, originally aired June 20, 2016 after Muhammad Ali's passing and the Omar Mateen Orlando shooting spree. I’ve still released a Qur’anic recitation for today so feel free to download that episode as well.

I've been thinking a lot lately about peace and loss and violence and the myths we teach each other about the existence and lives and beliefs of the "Other". Muhammad Ali, extremism, a total vision of Islam... how do we reconcile ourselves, live our Deen and in Peace.

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Welcome to a bonus episode of the 17 Verses podcast. As today is the first day of Ramadan (at least in my neck of the woods), I wanted to wish everyone Ramadan Kareem and also re-release a selection from Surah 2, Al-Baqarah or the Cow, verses 183-196. These verses concern fasting and prayer, as well as issues of defending one's faith from aggressors during the month of Ramadan.

Today marks the second day of the Hajj, which is the pilgrimage to Mecca that all Muslims must make once in their lifetime. It is also known as the Day of Arafah or Yawm al-Arafah. Today, we will be relaying to you, Du'a Arafah, which is a Shi'a prayer recited on this day, and the Prophet's Last Sermon which was given on this day in the 9th year of the Islamic calendar.
