The 3 biggest challenges when transitioning from being employed to your own boss

Listen Later

Going from being employed to self-employed can be a daunting prospect. Catherine conquered her doubts, made the move, and has never looked back since.

In this special episode of Leveraged Lifestyle, Catherine looks at the three biggest challenges during the process, and offers practical advice on how to overcome them, and by doing so, achieve the leveraged lifestyle you’ve always dreamed about.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The three main challenges you’ll come up against when transitioning from employed to self-employed are: Environment, People, and Routine.
  • Environment is incredibly important in establishing your productivity levels and work levels. It’s incredibly important to treat your new working space as just that. Try not to introduce too many comforts as it can lead to distraction, which will negatively impact your productivity.
  • Getting away from your computer screen is a great idea, and can refresh you after hours at work. Proper breaks help you refocus and allows your mind to realign.
  • Encourage hot-desking - Especially in an office environment, you can sometimes get a little too comfortable. Regular changes of your environment will, again, allow you to shake things up. Sharing also encourages you to keep your workspace tidy and clutter-free.
  • Try working in different places - Some great places to get work done include:
    • Coffee shops - They often have free wi-fi (although take care when using public internet), and as well as having your favourite drinks on hand, you can generally find yourself left alone to work in peace.
    • Hotels - Again, it’s easy to disappear in a hotel and get work done, whether in your room, the cafe, or the main lobby area.
    • The gym - Combine a workout with your workload.
    • Art gallery - Depending on the type of gallery, these can be peaceful, inspiring places to get some work done.
    • Libraries - Local libraries have desk space set aside for people to use for studying.
    • Restaurants - Over a meal, you can have fascinating and productive discussions.
    • Professional workspaces - You can often find local workspaces for hire, which are custom built for business needs and can allow a degree of networking to take place.
    • Private clubs - These can be a wonderful place to bring clients to, as they can add a level of gravitas to your image.
  • Sometimes it can be far more beneficial to cut yourself off from the internet by finding for yourself a Wi-Fi free location. A distraction-free work session with no opportunity for procrastination can allow you to focus entirely on the job at hand and get your most valuable work done.
  • People often don’t realise that when you go from a work environment to one of self-employment, the lack of regular human contact can have an effect on your mental health, on your focus, and your productivity. If you find this is becoming an issue for you, then maybe it’s time for you to try working in one of Catherine’s suggested environments.
