This week we talk to Jon Blau, of the Bloomington Herald Times, on the Hoosier’s impressive start, the depth of athletes on the roster, and offensive strategy against Michigan. Indianapolis Star’s Bob Kravitz also stops by to discuss the tough week 9 for the Colts, the top warning signs from the defeat and another viewpoint on the Hoosier’s impressive start from an Indiana Alumni.

  • The 317 Podcast Ep 8 - Lets Talk Hoosiers and Some Colts
This week I welcome the guy who took my old job: Jon Blau! Jon is an IU athletics reporter for The Herald Times in Bloomington. He’s a good friend of mine, a fellow Penn State grad and former colleague during my time at The Herald Times.
Today we’re diving into college football, as we wind up doing almost every time we get together! Despite being delayed due to the pandemic, the Hoosiers have an interesting year on the horizon. With a few question marks around Michael Penix and the defense forced to find a way to replace the production of Marcelino Ball, it looks like it could be a boom or bust year for this team. Jon talks all of the key areas for what we both think can be a very exciting year!
We also dive into basketball, and specifically highlight the growing supporting cast that can spread the floor and take some pressure of Devonte Green. The ceiling is higher this year, but how high is it?
Zak Keefer joins me for the second half of the show this week to talk about a Colts team who we still can’t figure out. We don’t really know yet if this team is legitimately good, but at 5-2 they’re in a good position going into November with time to bring it all together. Zak has some great insights about how they can take the next step and what we might expect to see during the second half of the season.

  • The 317 Podcast Ep 7 - Pacers hire Raptors assistant Nate Bjorkgren as head coach
Pacers reporter Scotty Agness joins us to talk about the Pacers’ new head coach Nate Bjorkgren!
Nate was an early candidate for the job, and after not hearing much about the search for the past month, he has finally been announced. He has a reputation as a great communicator and was a valuable mind on the Toronto Raptors’ coaching staff during their championship run.
Scotty delves into the entire process the Pacers went through in hiring Bjorkgren, other candidates that were considered and what ultimately made Nate standout as the coach the Pacers brass was most excited about.
How will this team develop under Bjorkgren? Will he be able to convince Oladipo to stick around for the foreseeable future? It’s the beginning of a new era, and a young, communicative coach fresh off a championship in 2019 may be the spark plug this team needs!

  • The 317 Podcast Ep 6. - Can The Colts Get In Stride For the Bengals
We’re joined by Colts beat writer Joel A. Erickson of the Indy Star to lead off episode 6 of the 317 podcast! Joel and I tackle what went wrong this past week against the Browns and what we learned about this Colts team in the process.

This week exposed a bunch of key weaknesses for an up and down Colts team that is struggling to find it’s identity and nail down a statement win. Can Philip Rivers really be expected to lead this team to victories over tough opponents, or is he just too old? Will the defense crumble every time they face a good mobile quarterback? Will the offensive line show up at some point?

The Colts need to start answering some of these questions soon if this season is going to be successful.

Joel is followed by The Athletic’s Bob Kravitz, who wrote a big piece this week on the ten black players who boycotted the IU in 1969. Joel details what the extreme sacrifices that boycott meant for those players, including being forced to leave the state, the toll it took on individuals involved and the comparison with boycotts happening during the pandemic, and we pay tribute to an all-time Indy great and local legend George Taliaferro.

Joel also talks Colts, the intensity of the NBA bubble and the bungling of the coronavirus outbreak on the Tennessee Titans.

I take another swing at MLB playoff predictions after nearly putting up an O-fer thus far on the AL side and I ruminate on what this latest championship means for Lebron’s legacy.
