The 4 Steps of Fundraising

Listen Later

This podcast of the 4 Steps of Fundraising stemmed from a blog I wrote titled The 4 Components of Nonprofit Fundraising back on Jan 2015. I'm coming back to this topic because nonprofits are expected to perform in shark infested waters. The environment for donors have been snatched up via crowdfunding agencies.

To learn more of funding around nonprofits and crowdfunding, click here for my opinion around that topic. But we're going to keep it moving. For the 4 steps of fundraising, they are the following:

  1. Create AWARENESS - show up on their radar, and get more people in the door. We as nonprofits need to learn how to market year-around, not just for events or programs. This should be an ongoing process.
  2. EDUCATE your supporters - don't pigeon-hole or discriminate anyone. You never know how someone can help you once their qualified and prove to be a good fit.
  3. Allow a VARIETY for your donors - not everyone wants to donate. There are donors who want to donate money, but are also looking for opportunities to fulfill their time. They too want to make a difference without becoming a social entrepreneur.
  4. Have donor LOYALTY - provide the opportunity for reoccurring donations. One-time gifts are going to happen, but that shouldn't be the goal. Create the expectation with your staff to have donors on a reoccurring donation.

As I said in the podcast, I'm not perfect and learning this with my nonprofit too. You (and I) must evolve to stay relevant. Therefore, make the necessary changes to be successful with your organization.
