Welcome to a super-sized PART 2 of our second ever movie special!!! Once again we are joined by guest star @7feetHi Theodus Crane as we have a smoke sesh and discuss our recent-ish viewing of Mortal Kombat (2021).
By the way, spoiler alert for the MK 2021 movie. Sheesh.
It’s been a week (at the time we recorded this) since we sat down together to watch it, so there’s been a minute to digest it. Theodus begins with an observation that the movie would have been better as a TV show. They all agree the movie is far more enjoyable (and clearly marketed to) fans of the game, and more often than not any story is more just meant to frame the fight scenes. Much like porn, but with the doing it scenes.
The lads give high (and stoned) marks for production, set, and costume design, and overall the special effects. As well as fan service easter eggs mingled with ways to bring the Mortal Kombat universe into contemporary life. A recurring question keeps popping up: what’s with the new character Cole? The discussion gets into a ramble about the characters, tropes, super powers, thematic elements comparable to other flicks, and more that comes back around to the persistent feeling that this would have been better as a series. They also note how little the main character was developed, but how fun certain characters with no development were anyways. Also Kano seems to be everyone’s fav from this movie, but Sub-Zero’s horror villain vibe was pretty cool.
A quick side track goes into the strains of the day, which leads Theodus to give us a quick review of Delta 9, summed up thusly: will work in a pinch.
The sesh turns to comparing the original Mortal Kombat movie from the 90’s, and the contrasts and context of both films in their respective pop culture moments in time, and certain 80’s inspirations. All agree there’ll likely be sequels. In summation: it might not be everyone’s bowl of weed, but it’s a fun flick to watch getting high with your buddies. They wrap up the sesh, pondering the future of going to see movies in a theater, and creating a setup at home to have a better movie watching experience anytime you want.
