On this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program we're celebrating the centenary today of the great Belgian musician Bobby Jaspar who played with the greatest musicians of the era back in his day but is little spoken about today.  Among others we'll hear him with John Coltrane & Mal Waldron, with his wife Blossom Dearie, in JJ Johnson's group, with Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Donald Byrd, Wynton Kelly, a rare vocal performance from Kenny Burrell, Chet Baker and one of his last performances with fellow Belgian guitarist Rene Thomas at Ronnie Scott's.

Some previews include the Infidels Jazz Presents: Sun Ra Arkestra at The Pearl (taking in the theme from a rare Saturn performance in 1977), some paranormal adventures from Mike Rud, some smokin' B3 from Michael Blake, and some Monk from Arvind Ramdas!

Filled out with a goodbye nod to the Reverend Jesse Jackson exhorting Cannonball Adderley to Walk Tall and a couple of other birthdays - Craig Taborn today and Kate Olson this weekend.

Besides being World Radio Day, this is Socan Reporting Week which is a perfect reason to feature great Canadian Music on this (almost) All-Canadian edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!  Keith Hartshorn-Walton took in a low-brass flavoured version of the theme.

Our first Canadian feature is a rundown of the Jazz Juno Nominees for this year: Anthony D'Alessandro, Aretha Tillotson, Justin Gray, Renee Rosnes, and Nancy Walker for Jazz Album of the Year Solo.  Then Steve Holt, Alexis Baro, the Shuffle Demons, the CODE Quartet, and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (with Jill Townsend) for Jazz Album of the Year Group.  Then Ale Avery Nunez, Alex Samaras, the Atlantic Jazz Collective (featuring Norma Winstone), Caity Gyorgy, and Laura Anglade for Jazz Album of the Year Vocal!

Our second feature of the afternoon is this weekend's 6th Annual edition of Jazz at the Bolt, the festival organized by Cory Weeds and Tim Reinert/ Infidels Jazz at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.  Music from the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra, Champian Fulton, Jacob Chung, Madeleine Elkins, Brandon Oscar Suarez, Julian Borkowski (featured with Neil Gray), The Bill Coon Double Quartet, Ralph A. Moore & Peter Washington (guesting with Charles Chen - see what I did there?), Paul Pigat, Tyler Henderson, Sharon Minemoto, KneeJerk, and Arvind Ramdas - a sampling of the great music happening this weekend!

And we'll fill it out with Mike Rud and Michael Blake (both at Frankie's Jazz Club next weekend), and recent releases from James Danderfer and Emad Armoush & the Avant-Garde Flamenco Trio!

On this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, the first half of the show will be handed over to a retrospective of the late Richie Beirach who passed away earlier this week. We'll hear him in many contexts across his career including with his long-time collaborator Dave Liebman (Richie's visits to Vancouver were mostly in the context of their working quartet Quest), in all-star trios and solo. The late Ian McDougall, who passed away the same day as Richie, takes in the theme with his regular collaborators including Oliver Gannon.

We'll also have a quick Grammy rundown in advance of the awards this weekend that includes Lakecia Benjamin, Chick Corea, Nicole Zuraitis, Sullivan Fortner, Michael Mayo, Arturo O'Farrill (playing Carla Bley's last commissioned work), Laila Biali, The Sun Ra Arkestra (also coming to Vancouver in February courtesy of our friends at Infidels Jazz), and Branford Marsalis doing the music of Keith Jarrett.

That last one doubles as part of a preview of Chris Gestrin doing Jarrett's music tonight at Pyatt Hall (those Infidels again!), then other preview this week for Thomas Marriott (tomorrow night at Frankie's) and Ayelet Rose Gottlieb (workshops this week culminating in a show at Tyrant Studios next Thursday). Looking forward and looking back, kicking off 2026 in style on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!

A new release from Carsten Dahl takes in the theme and then a nod to Milt Jackson's birthday yesterday leads into a survey of some great contemporary vibes players with Joel Ross, Patricia Brennan, Sasha Berliner, and Steve Nelson.

Of course Nelson is part of the all-star ensemble at Frankie's Jazz Club this weekend along with David Hazeltine, Steve Davis, Cory Weeds, Ken Lister and Jesse Cahill so we have a set featuring all of them in various combinations (and include a nod to Nick Hempton for his 50th birthday yesterday!)

The great Sonny Greenwich turned 90 years old yesterday and will get a feature set with some great rarities, a Jimmy Dale Orchestra recording that also features Ed Bickert & Lenny Breau, Hank Mobley, a 1979 single with Claude Ranger, an unreleased JazzBeat session with Mike Allen and Julian McDonough among other gems. And we'll take it out with a preview for a great Coastal Jazz show later this month with the Action trio - David Binney, Louis Cole and Pera Krstajic!

Seasonal fun on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program - an extended feature for Carla's Christmas Carols, Carla Bley's brass quintet arrangements of some traditional tunes and a couple of her own compositions taken from both the official ECM Records 2009 release and an unofficial live contemporaneous concert.


The first part of the show will be a retrospective of the late percussionist Marilyn Mazur who passed away last week featured in projects and collaborations with Miles Davis, Nils Petter Malvaer, Eivind Aarset, Bugge Wesseltoft, Lotte Anker, Marilyn Crispell, Jan Garbarek, Jean-Michel Pilc, Norma Winstone, Pierre Dorge & The New Jungle Orchestra, her all-women ensemble Shamania and more. An amazingly prolific artist who deserves to be better known in North America!


We'll have time for previews for Tania Gill and Jacob Wutzke playing tonight at Tyrant Studios and Frankie's After Dark respectively. And birthdays for Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Mulatu Astatke, Bobby Timmons and Bob Brookmeyer with a big finish from Tim Warfield & his all-star ensemble doing a Hanukkah tribute!
