The lazy days of summer on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program with a varied mix. A feature that I've been wanting to get to for a while - Art Pepper at the Cellar in the 1950s put out earlier this year on the Omnivore record label with (depending on who you believe) Chris Gage or Al Neil (or some combination thereof) on piano. Two of the gentlemen responsible for this release - Dave Quarin and Gavin Walker are both gone now so this feature is long overdue.

Recent releases of early and late (actually last) solo performances by Chick Corea sandwich the new Conrad Herwig release of the Latin Side of Chick Corea (not a big stretch). And some previews from Neil Swainson (taking in the theme in a duo with George Shearing) at Frankie's this weekend, Infidels Jazz Presents: Miki Yamanaka Trio + Nicole Glover at Revue Stage on Sunday, and George Colligan coming up at Frankie's next weekend.

A sad goodbye to Irene Aebi who passed away last week - we'll hear her in the company of her husband and musical associate Steve Lacy dispensing some Sad Advice, looking for Somebody Special and celebrating Gay Paree Bop!

We'll take it out with a brand new one (released today!) from Linda May Han Oh & Melissa Aldana celebrating Charlie Parker's birthday a week early!

Featuring pianists on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! Most of the show will be handed over to the great pianist Mal Waldron whose birthday is this weekend on August 16th - either his centenary or his 101st depending on which source you use. We'll hear early recordings with John Coltrane, Billie Holiday (including his dedication to Billie with Jackie McLean), Eric Dolphy and Booker Little. A set dedicated to the 3 recordings he made with Manfred Eicher that inaugurated the ECM and JAPO record labels. And a set featuring the 3 recent Record Store Day releases featuring Waldron - solo Searching in Grenoble 1978, at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase in 1979 and with Steve Lacy (The Mighty Warriors!) in Belgium in 1995, concluding with his very last recording in 2002 with Lacy and Jean-Jacques Avenel.
We'll also hear from birthday celebrants Eddie Costa and Ben Sidran as well as new releases from Nduduzo Makhathini, Sullivan Fortner, Marilyn Crispell with Anders Jormin, The Helen Sung Big Band and Miki Yamanaka with Nicole Glover. Of course, Infidels Jazz Presents: Miki Yamanaka Trio + Nicole Glover at Revue Stage next week on August 23rd.
A belated birthday for Kenny Burrell takes in the theme and a last birthday for trombonist Dave Robbins takes out the show (with a shoutout to Wilmer Fawcett who also celebrates today!).

Just enjoying some jazz on a summer's day on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program with a bit of a reconstruction of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival as a preview of this weekend's screening of the classic Bert Stern film with an opening concert by Laura Crema at the VIFF Centre this Sunday presented by Infidels Jazz.

Some music from the film and some from releases that have come out over the years - The Duke Ellington Orchestra (who take in the theme), Jimmy Giuffre, Dave Brubeck, Dinah Washington, Anita O'Day, Max Roach + 4, Horace Silver and Louis Armstrong!

Also a set of Monk tunes built around the recent issue of Monk in Paris in 1967 from the Monk estate along with Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band and new releases from the Carlos Henriquez Big Band and the Charles Ruggiero trio. (Of course, Monk played Newport '58 too!)

In honour of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's birthday today, we'll start with his dynamite version of Blue Trane from Germany in 1972 and then feature last year's RSD release of Kirk at the Penthouse in Seattle in 1967. And fill it all out with music from guitarist Lorne Lofsky (who's in town at Frankie's this weekend), and Side A, an old fave from Sharon Minemoto!

I was lucky enough to spend 10 days at this year's Montreal International Jazz Festival (https://montrealjazzfest.com/en/program/artists) and this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program will do a recap of some of the many artists I heard!

We'll hear from Diana Krall (who takes in the theme), a Coltrane/Miles Centenary set with Giant Steps from the Tiberi Tapes (thanks to Ken Druker for a great presentation!), Marcus Miller's We Want Miles band, the Headhunters with Craig Handy, Christian McBride & Julian Lage, and Nicholas Payton & Butcher Brown doing their Supreme Blue! A set featuring Cecile McLorin Salvant & Sullivan Fortner leads into a mix with pieces by Cymande, Joshua Redman, Hiromi featuring Arturo O'Farrill, Brandee Younger, Immanuel Wilkins, Cassa Overall, Mononeon (I wish you well!), Charles Lloyd, GEORGE with John Hollenbeck, Anna Webber, Chiquita Magic and Sarah Rossy, Craig Taborn, the David Binney Action Trio featuring Louis Cole, Laura Anglade, and Angine de Poitrine with the BEATrio: Bela Fleck, Edmar Castañeda (Colombian harp), Antonio Sanchez capping it all off! Just a taste of a glorious ten days!

On this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program we're paying tribute to the great Canadian pianist Oliver Jones who passed away this week at the age of 91. Besides taking in the theme, we'll feature an episode of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz that featured Oliver Jones along with some other favourite pieces.

The Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival is on this weekend and we'll have a feature set and ticket giveaway for Sunday night's closing concert with Laila Biali which also features some young up-and-coming performer's as special guests.

Other fest previews for this weekend include late addition James Byrnes, Honeybear The Band, Ardeshir, and Saul Berson as well as shows from Infidels Jazz: Roberta Gambarini & Tamir Hendelman at the Revue Stage on Sunday afternoon and Gordon Grdina's trio with Tommy Babin & Kenton Loewen at the Revue Stage next Thursday.

We'll open with a Jazz Birthdays set for July 24th celebrants - Charles McPherson (87), Barry Romberg (67), Jane Fair (77), Billy Taylor (105) and Jon Faddis (73)! [Faddis is also coming to the Blueshore in November!]

Bit of an unusual show on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! We start with a couple of birthdays - Joe Morello takes in the theme and then a feature set to celebrate the centenary of trumpeter Ray Copeland who played with Monk, Lionel Hampton, Randy Weston and more.

Then we head to Jericho Park for this weekend's Vancouver Folk Music Festival! A feature set for the great Billy Bragg on the main stage tomorrow night and an eclectic set featuring music from festival artists Kazdoura, Aysanabee, Mitsune (from Japan), Valerie June, Maruja Limón (from Spain), Cousin Harley/Paul Pigat, Sahra Halgan (from Somaliland) and Yagody (from Ukraine)!

Finishing with a preview of some music from next weekend's Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival! I'll do a ticket giveaway for Laila Biali's show at the Chief Sepass Theatre on Sunday July 26th. And we'll hear music from Daniel Hersog Jazz Orchestra with special guest vocalist Joanna Wallfisch at the Chief Sepass Theatre on Thursday July 23rd at 1pm!

Rebroadcasting a great show from July 10th 2020 on this afternoon's edition of the A-Trane Radio Program.  Celebrating birthdays for Cootie Williams (who takes in the theme) and Lee Morgan.  Most of the show is handed over to the great composer Ennio Morricone who had passed away shortly before this show originally aired.  Besides featuring a number of his film soundtrack themes, we'll also hear collabortations and interpretations of his music with Tony Foster, Bill Frisell/Petra Haden, Yoyo Ma, Chet Baker, John Zorn & crew, Charlie Haden/Pat Metheny, Oddjob and others.
