Feature sets this afternoon for the Sunnyside archival release of the Thelonious Monk quartet in Bremen 1965, a feature for the Pyroclastic Records label which includes the new release from Kris Davis with the Lutosławski Quartet and recent releases from Trio of Bloom, Patricia Brennan, Brandon Seabrook, Sylvie Courvoisier & Mary Halvorson, and Ned Rothenberg, and a farewell tribute to the late Rebecca Kilgore. Looking forward and looking back, kicking off 2026 in style on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!

A new release from Carsten Dahl takes in the theme and then a nod to Milt Jackson's birthday yesterday leads into a survey of some great contemporary vibes players with Joel Ross, Patricia Brennan, Sasha Berliner, and Steve Nelson.

Of course Nelson is part of the all-star ensemble at Frankie's Jazz Club this weekend along with David Hazeltine, Steve Davis, Cory Weeds, Ken Lister and Jesse Cahill so we have a set featuring all of them in various combinations (and include a nod to Nick Hempton for his 50th birthday yesterday!)

The great Sonny Greenwich turned 90 years old yesterday and will get a feature set with some great rarities, a Jimmy Dale Orchestra recording that also features Ed Bickert & Lenny Breau, Hank Mobley, a 1979 single with Claude Ranger, an unreleased JazzBeat session with Mike Allen and Julian McDonough among other gems. And we'll take it out with a preview for a great Coastal Jazz show later this month with the Action trio - David Binney, Louis Cole and Pera Krstajic!

Seasonal fun on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program - an extended feature for Carla's Christmas Carols, Carla Bley's brass quintet arrangements of some traditional tunes and a couple of her own compositions taken from both the official ECM Records 2009 release and an unofficial live contemporaneous concert.


The first part of the show will be a retrospective of the late percussionist Marilyn Mazur who passed away last week featured in projects and collaborations with Miles Davis, Nils Petter Malvaer, Eivind Aarset, Bugge Wesseltoft, Lotte Anker, Marilyn Crispell, Jan Garbarek, Jean-Michel Pilc, Norma Winstone, Pierre Dorge & The New Jungle Orchestra, her all-women ensemble Shamania and more. An amazingly prolific artist who deserves to be better known in North America!


We'll have time for previews for Tania Gill and Jacob Wutzke playing tonight at Tyrant Studios and Frankie's After Dark respectively. And birthdays for Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Mulatu Astatke, Bobby Timmons and Bob Brookmeyer with a big finish from Tim Warfield & his all-star ensemble doing a Hanukkah tribute!

Celebrating December 5th Birthdays on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program!

Bumper crop of birthdays including bassist Art Davis, Italian pianists Stefano Bollani & Enrico Pieranunzi, cellist Tomeka Reid, South African alto Gwigwi Mrwebi, Ellington vocalist Kay Davis, trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, Little Richard, and the centenary of the New Orleans saxophonist Alvin "Red" Tyler! Not to mention the birthday of our very own Cory Weeds who gets his own feature set!

Building tributes to three great musicians around live performances on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! The legendary Coleman Hawkins celebrates his birthday today and we'll hear a number of live performances including the 1940 performance of Body and Soul from the Savory Collection. Sheila Jordan's Celebration of Life took place earlier this week on what would have been her 97th birthday. We'll hear the full second set of her duo with Cameron Brown at Ironworks from March of 2017 along with a number of other iconic performances. Finally we'll hear Jack DeJohnette with his Special Edition at the Edmonton Jazz City Festival in 1980 with a short interview conducted by the late Gavin Walker along with some other favourite JD recordings.

We'll also have time for some other recent birthdays - the theme from David Amram who turned 95 earlier this week, Aretha Tillotson with a new release featuring the Jensen sisters and centenaries for June Christy (Something Cool!) and (today) Sal Salvador! Rounded out by the new release from Neil Gray featuring Julian Borkowski who is in at Frankie's Jazz Club this Wednesday recreating a great Richard Williams album and Harry Bartlett Music who brings his trio to Tyrant Studios tonight!

Special Autumn Airlift Membership Drive edition of The A-Trane Radio Program featuring the music of Pharoah Sanders this afternoon. The last few years have seen a number of reissues and archival releases featuring the music of "Little Rock" and we're going to do a bit of a survey across them.

We'll hear from Izipho Zam (My Gifts) on Strata-East Records, the Alice Coltrane 1971 Carnegie Hall Concert, Love is Here - the Complete Paris ORTF Recordings, Harvest Time and a sampling of the Complete Theresa Recordings box set on Mosaic - the last reissue project initiated by the late Michael Cuscuna! Also included are some early collaborations with John Coltrane, some comments in Sanders' own voice from a 1993 interview for ESP-Disk' and one of the final versions of his signature composition The Creator Has a Master Plan with Joey DeFrancesco!

Special Edition of The A-Trane Radio Program this Friday Oct 31st to kick off this year's Vancouver Co-op Radio CFRO Fall Membership Drive!
