The Abortion Debate During COVID-19

Listen Later

Since the emergence of the COVID-19 crisis in the U.S., some states have attempted to limit or ban abortion, arguing it is an elective procedure that should be restricted during the pandemic. What could this mean for abortion access and the larger debate moving forward?
Today on the show, legal historian Mary Ziegler offers us historical, legal, and social context for this developing conflict.
Mary Ziegler is a professor at Florida State University College of Law. She specializes in the legal history of reproduction, the family, sexuality, and the Constitution. She is the author of After Roe: The Lost History of the Abortion Debate (Harvard University Press, 2015), Beyond Abortion: Roe v. Wade and the Fight for Privacy (Harvard University Press, 2018), and most recently Abortion and the Law in America: Roe v. Wade to the Present (Cambridge University Press, 2020).
