More than 500 people have died so far in a cholera epidemic that is sweeping the Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Health Organization (WHO) said. Outbreaks of the water-borne disease occur regularly in Congo, mainly due to poor sanitation and a lack of access to clean drinking water. But this year’s epidemic, which has already hit at least 10 urban areas including the capital Kinshasa, is particularly worrying as it comes as about 1.4 million people have been displaced by violence in the central Kasai region.

President Robert Mugabe yesterday said he will not impose his wife as Zimbabwe’s next president as he opened up on his troubled relationship with Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mugabe told his supporters at Bindura’s Chipadze Stadium, Mashonaland Central that anointing Grace as his successor would be a violation of the Zanu PF constitution. However, the declaration contradicted his wife who had spoken a few minutes earlier emphasising that the 93-year-old ruler had a right to hand-pick a successor.

Several southern African nations are deploying troops to Lesotho. This comes amid increased tensions after the killing of the country's army chief. The force includes troops from South Africa, Angola and Mozambique. The Lesotho government has declined to verify the size of the force. Lieutenant General Khoantle Motsomotso was killed on Tuesday in a gunfight with two rival officers -- who also were killed.

Angola’s ruling party won elections on Aug. 23 with 61 percent of the vote, the electoral commission said in an announcement of the final results. The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola will get 150 seats in the 220-member legislature and its presidential candidate, Joao Lourenco, will replace outgoing President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who is stepping down after 38 years in power. The outcome is the same as the provisional results that were published on Aug. 25.

President Jacob Zuma has condemned the killing of the Chief of the Defence Force of Lesotho.  In a statement, President Zuma expressed his "revulsion" at the killing of Lieutenant General Khoantle Motsomotso, reportedly by an army officer. Lesotho's ministry of Defence confirmed that Motsomotso (the head of the army in that country) was killed at his home. Two high-ranking army officers were critically injured in an exchange of fire at Lesotho’s Ratjomose Barracks in Maseru.

And lastly Mozambique opposition leader has promised to sign peace deal by November to end years of fighting with the government.

Zambia faces violence if a national dialogue brokered by the Commonwealth between the government and the opposition fails to reconcile the two sides, the main opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema said on Thursday. Hichilema was freed from prison in August after the state dropped charges of plotting to overthrow the government, but a judge warned him he could be arrested again at any time.
