Oliver Patel studied philosophy of mind long before AI governance was a career. Today he leads enterprise AI governance at a global pharmaceutical company, and his answer to how much technical fluency you need is a practical one: enough to understand what your engineers are building and why, and enough hands-on use of AI to spot where it falls short.
Oliver's path ran from politics and a master's in philosophy and public policy at LSE, through research at UCL, to international data policy for the UK government, where he worked on keeping data flowing between the EU and the UK after Brexit. Then he moved from writing the rules to implementing them inside a global enterprise. He trains AIGP candidates, writes a widely read newsletter on enterprise AI governance, and is the author of the forthcoming book Fundamentals of AI Governance.
The conversation covers how much technical fluency you really need without a technology background, what it takes to build one framework across dozens of jurisdictions, how to govern without becoming the blocker, the three Gs he uses to govern AI at enterprise scale, why AI hallucinations are getting harder to spot rather than disappearing, and how the profession is broadening.
If you are coming to AI governance from outside technology, or already doing the work and trying to keep pace with how fast AI is spreading through your organization, this is the episode of The AI Governor podcast for you.
NB. Oliver's comments are his personal views and do not represent those of his employer.

Ulas Ozguven spent 25 years in intrusion prevention, identity fraud protection and secure data rooms before AI governance existed as a career. His advice for anyone looking at the field: none of that was wasted, and moving into it isn't starting over.
Ulas is co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer of VerifyWise, an AI governance platform he runs from London with his co-founder Gorkem Cetin in Toronto - two people who, at the time of recording, had never met in person.
We talk about the pattern he only saw in hindsight, why AI governance is a bigger than cybersecurity, what organizations discover when they finally inventory their own AI, and why influence and judgement matter more than technical depth in this work.
