In which we observe the somber humbling of a once-prosperous merchant, M. Morrel, whose steadfast honour is tested by the calamitous loss of his ship, the Pharaon, and the heavy burdens of debt that threaten to ruin his famed house. Amidst the somber gloom of faded prosperity and the heartfelt loyalty of those around him, a stern English creditor offers a slender hope through an extension of time, whilst a mysterious promise is sworn upon by Morrel’s daughter, hinting at fortunes yet to unfold.
