You bring your 5 year-old to the dentist. Today, they will be taking x-rays for the first time. But you're not worried - you're confident that your child is cavity free. You and your family are master brushes and flossers. But to your dismay, the dentist says that there are cavities between all the back teeth. How is this possible? We were so careful about candy and pop!
These are what we call surprise cavitites. In this episode, we will explore how cavities actually work and what foods tend to cause them so we can see how exactly to avoid such unpleasant surprises. Being a dentist by trade, It would be shameful not to make an episode about cavities, so here we are!

Traffic lights are everywhere you look in North America. We don't think twice about them. Traffic circles and roudabouts on the other hand, they seem to have a bad rap. But really, it should be the opposite. They are better than traffic lights in most metrics.
Traffic lights seem like a good solution to the obvious threat of cars crashing into each other - they are certainly better than nothing. But high speeds, complicated intersections and bad human decision-making make traffic lights much more dangerous than you think. By design, traffic circles eliminate these concerns overnight. The argument for why traffic circles are better is not circular. It's pretty straightforward.
Let me show the alien perspective on why traffic circles and roudabouts are much better than trafffic lights.

You are watching a striking sunset. The candy red, orange, pink and yellow, meting together. You just can't take your eyes off of it. No wonder it's one of the most universally beloved sights. It's immediately clear why it's so beautiful. But...you can't stop yourself from wondering: what kind of crazy physics make sunsets beautiful? And for that matter, why is the sky blue? Why is it not any other color?
Your inner alien wants to know! Perhaps one of the most common science questions ever asked, we needed to do an episode on this!
In this short-form episode, we will attempt to answer these two questions in an approachable way: Why is the sky blue and why are sunsets red?
We hope you have fun sharing this alien dinner conversation!

Did you know that it's estimated that 1.5 billion cows are now living on Earth? Yeah you read that right. 1.5 billion. That's like 18% of the global HUMAN POPULATION. If we talk about this in terms of biomass, considering an average human weighs about 133 lbs (60 kg) and an average cow weights about 1200-1400 lbs (540-640 kg), there is roughly the same total biomass of cattle to humans on Earth. Then you throw in all the other livestock we eat and the numbers are beyond staggering.
Why on earth do we have so much livestock living on our planet?? Well it's two main reasons: the world eats a lot of meat (too much meat), and producing meat is a very inneficient way to produce food.
This episode dives into how eating meat doesn't make sense if we want to live on earth sustainably. There is just no way around it. But thankfully, there are many ways in which we can change our eating habits that would virtually solve this problem overnight.

Your inner Alien kicks in you and you need to know - Why do paper cuts hurt so much? Is there an explanation for this?
In this short-form episode, we will answer this very question and we hope it will make for great alien dinner conversation!

In North America, we are starting to see EVs more and more commonly. But we are still behind: The rest of the world is pulling ahead in this regard at an alarming rate. And yet, so many North-Americans still have their heads burried in the sand of innacurate EV myths.
As the world is rapidly transitioning to electric passenger vehicles, we explore all the ways that electric cars make sense and tradiotnal gas cars don't.
Hint: We kind of need them ASAP to keep the planet liveable at this point.

I was walking after a summer rain and suddenly noticed something that felt new to me. And yet I knew it wasn't. But it was the first time I was REALLY noticing it. The wet sidewalk was now darker than when it was dry.
Of course this is normal and expected after some rain, but today my inner Alien suddenly needed to know - Why does water make everything look darker?
In this short-form episode, we will answer that question and we hope it will make for great alien dinner conversation!
Enjoy!
