Questions for Jimmy Kennedy of InsideTracker:About you What you do at InsideTracker? What’s your background, and how did that lead to getting your PhD and geeking out on blood work? *go into as much depth as you’d like on this. I really like diving into guests backgrounds to see what makes them who they are.
Recovery Where do most CrossFitters fail in their recovery? What are your favorite recovery tools or tactics? What’s the best way for athletes to monitor their recovery state? If you’re tracking sleep… are you just looking at total amount of sleep, or are you considering different stages of sleep? Are athletes overtraining or under recovering?
Nutrition There’s lots of talk about macros… where do you think they fit into the competitive CrossFitters world? Is there an ideal macro and calorie range for an athlete in a certain training cycle, or does it “depend” day to day? Are there any foods that you think should be eliminated from the diet? I know it seems like a lot of athletes that I work with are advised to remove meat from their diets. What are your thoughts on supplementation for performance and health optimization… can an athlete get everything they need from food?
Blood What are some of the blood markers that you see CrossFitters needing to keep their eye on? Where do you see blood work fitting into an athletes performance optimization bag?
Random questions What do you think about training while sick? Any thoughts on the direction of CrossFit with CrossFit Health?
Conclusion Are there any questions that I didn’t ask you that I should have? Is there anything that you’d like to promote?
Are there any questions that you think we should have asked you?

The initial setup…Find your ideal bodyweight * If you weigh 200 pounds now, and would like to weigh 150 pounds… then this number is 150. It’s as simple as that. Run your protein number off of this bodyweight * This means that your daily goal protein consumption will be 150 grams spread out over the day. Download MyFitnessPal for iPhone / Android Click on app/more/goals/calorie & macronutrient goals Set your macronutrients to 40% carbs / 30% protein / 30% fat * Once you take a look at this on MyFitnessPall it will all make sense. * You will simply adjust your calories until it hits your protein goal of 150 (example).
Another example, my weight is 200 pounds, so my ideal calories are 2665. It’s an easy trial and error game.
Now you know how much you should be eating each day. That is your target. Easy, right?
What should you be eating…Start with your protein… you usually want to have your protein broken up evenly between the number of meals that you’ll eat that day.
So, if I eat 4 times, I’m going to have 50 grams of protein per meal or feeding (as I like to call them).
If you’re a little off on this, don’t worry about it. It does not need to be exact. It’s just a guideline, and each day will be different, but you’ll get the feel for it.
For the fats… At first, with the fat, just see where you’re at when the day ends.
This is where meal prepping, or eating similar things for most days is very beneficial. You’ll have much more control over these adjustments, and end up hitting your targets more often.
Lastly, you’ll plan your carbsThis one is pretty easy.
You want to eat the majority of your carbs around your workout.
Yes, you NEED to be working out. I don’t care who you are. Your body is supposed to move, so move it.
You should be moving everyday, and strength training 3-6 times a week.
I don’t care what type of strength training you’re doing (CrossFit, Barre, Yoga, etc.).
Just know that you need to be doing strength training, and endurance training. If you want to see how I setup my training/moving click here.
Here are a few scenarios… UPDATED AND REVISED 6am workout * Eat green shake for breakfast around 11am-12pm. * Spinach, kale, full fat yogurt, protein powder (see my Green Machine Shake post). * Eat some old fashioned oatmeal, almond butter, and protein powder at 2-3pm. * Eat a large salad around 5pm. * Spread the rest of your daily carbs/protein/fat out over the rest of your day
12pm workout * Eat banana, and protein shake after your workout (1:30pm). * Eat green shake for breakfast around 2pm. * Spinach, kale, full fat yogurt, protein powder (see my Green Machine Shake post). * Eat a bowl of old fashioned oatmeal, and eggs around 5pm. * Spread the remaining carbs/pro/fat over your dinner meal(s). Don’t worry about eating late. If you’re working out hard like you should be… this is actually one of the best times to eat.
6pm workout * Eat green shake for breakfast around 11am-12pm. * Spinach, kale, full fat yogurt, protein powder (see my Green Machine Shake post). * Large salad around 2-3pm. * Oatmeal with protein powder around 4-5pm. * Eat banana, and protein shake after your workout (7pm). * Spread the remaining carbs/protein/fat over your dinner meal(s).
You should be seeing the trend here. In this updated version of How to setup your diet for success I have you following a form of intermittent fast, which I have seen amazing results with.
The goal is to have 14-16 hours between your last meal of the day, and the first meal of the next day. It’s really that simple.
What you’ll find is more energy, an easier time losing body fat, and a clearer mind for your work tasks.
During the rest of the day, or your eating window…
You’re still following the original How to setup your diet for success principles of eating low glycemic carbs the meal before your workout (unless it’s before your eating window), and then a higher glycemic carb right after your workout, and finally more low glycemic carbs the rest of the day.
It’s possible that this seems overwhelming right now, but just start using the MyFitnessPal app, and trust me, it will get easier.
This is something that YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DO. It’s so much more important than any subject that you were forced to learn in school. So much more important!
WaterSimple.
Drink .75 ounces per pound of bodyweight. Done.
Use the app called Waterlogged to track your daily water intake. And buy the upgraded version, so you can get the smart reminders.

Last week I did an experiment… I purchased the 5 day Fasting Mimicking Diet from ProLon after reading The Longevity Diet by Valter Longo PhD, and listening to several podcasts that talk about the positives of multi-day fasting.
If you want to hear about all of the resources that really got me excited about doing a multi-day fast, and eventually why I decided on the 5 day Fasting Mimicking Diet by ProLon click here to ready about (or listen) to my process. https://allaroundjoe.com/156.
Ok… here are all of the blood markers that I was looking at via my InsideTracker results.
Creatine Kinase (positive) 254 before 130 after
Glucose (positive) 102 before 93 after
TS – Iron binding (positive) 33% before 29% after
Ferritin – Iron storage (negative) 350 before 517 after
Testosterone (negative*) 359 before 311 after *This is most accurately tested within an hour of waking. I setup my blood test to be done within an hour of waking, but the lab tech didn’t know how to handle the blood work that I needed, and my blood didn’t end up being drawn until about 2.5 hours after waking. So, these results (testosterone and cortisol) could be off.
Free testosterone (negative*) 5.7 before 4.1 after
SHBG – Sex hormone carrier (optimized) 32 before 44 after
Lipid Group (neutral)
Total Cholesterol (neutral) 161 before 165 after
HDL (negative) 52 before 48 after
LDL (negative) 92 before 102 after
Triglycerides (neutral) 84 before 63 after
Cortisol (negative) 18.4 before 19.6 after
Vitamin B12 (negative) 618 before 1062 after
Magnesium Group (negative)
Liver Enzymes Group

Day 5 of the ProLon Fasting Mimicking DietThe final day of the Fasting Mimicking Diet was kind of a combination of a couple of the days. The first half of the day was totally fine, but the evening was pretty rough. I was very hungry, and even watching movies didn’t keep my mind off of eating.
We went for a really nice 2 mile hike in the Adirondack mountains on a beautiful sunny fall day, then to keep things as easy as possible we rented a hotel room to hangout and watch movies. Although they had fast internet so I ended up working for most of the evening.
In the morning I headed to the Utica Quest Diagnostics lab to get my post fast blood work done. And guess what… the woman running the lab had no idea how to do the InsideTracker blood testing in her computer.
So, I was able to get Jonathan Levitt of InsideTracker on the phone to walk her though it. Jonathan is a total rock star for helping me out on a Saturday morning. I’m so impressed with him!
But, the blood was taken, and now we wait for the results which will be reveled in the next AllAroundJoe podcast. Stay tuned!
Now I’m going to go eat some bagels!
Here’s what I ate on day 5:Breakfast Tea Nut based bar Algal oil

Day 4 of the ProLon Fasting Mimicking DietThe second to the last day of the ProLon 5 day Fasting Micking Diet has been conquered!
Day 4 was actually much easier than day 2 or 3 from a hunger perspective. My brain was clear, I recorded a great podcast with Thomas from Metta, worked the rest of the day at the library, drove a couple hours, and we slept at in a Walmart parking lot.
It still took me a little time to fall asleep, but once I fell asleep, I was out and didn’t wake up until about 8:30am.

Day 3 of the ProLon Fasting Mimicking DietOn day 3 of the Fasting Mimicking Diet things started off really well! I felt hungry in the morning but had a bar to keep me semi satisfied through the early afternoon.
Hunger was definitely a factor, but it wasn’t really too bad.
Things stayed pretty darn stable until night time rolled around.
It could be because I usually eat the vast majority of my calories at night, or it could be that I’m just starting to get hungry from not eating too much during the day…
Either way, last night was tough! We watched a movie which I thought would keep me from thinking about food, but… it didn’t really help. And once bed time rolled around I was feeling pretty tired, but little did I know that I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep… I must have drifted off at some point, but I didn’t really sleep much at all last night. Bummer!
Only two days to go!

Day 2 of the ProLon Fasting Mimicking DietOk, so… today was rough. We went to Niagara Falls and walked from the US side across the bridge to the Canada side, and during that walk I felt like I was bonking.
I guess that because I’ve felt the sensation of bonking before during while doing an endurance event I knew what was occurring and the feeling was known to me.
What I am figuring out is that I do have some emotions tide up in eating, and I do look forward to the food that I eat at almost every meal. This is more of an observation than me telling you this fasting thing is hard. It is what it is. Definitely doable, so far.
