In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Jazzart brings an exciting triple bill of powerful new works. The programme responds to and touches upon the themes of reflection, release and rebirth.

The line-up includes an extract from REQUIEM AND AFTER TEARS, an international co-production premiered at the Leeds Grand Theatre in partnership with Opera North and Phoenix Dance Theatre. REQUIEM responds to Mozart’s famous 200-year-old Requiem and AFTER TEARS is composed by award-winning South African composer Neo Muyanga. Directed and Choreographed by Jazzart’s Artistic Director, Dane Hurst, the works present a perspective on the themes of collective loss, the rituals of mourning and remembrance, and the celebration of life.

Castaways is an ensemble physical theatre and circus work in which a ragtag collection of characters from different worlds are thrust together on a tiny raft and forced to reckon with themselves and each other in their desperate dance for survival.

The work takes a magnifying glass to the body in crisis, using physical comedy, clowning and puppetry to establish and explore archetypal characters, and circus arts to push these characters and their relationships to the brink of calamity. The vessel becomes a microcosm for the struggle for survival and meaning in a divided world on the edge of social and environmental collapse.
