South Africa produces enough food to feed all its people. Farmers, agri processingplants, food manufacturers, retailers, warehousing and logistics companies, food distributors,and thousands of other businesses that operate in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry, all typically generate huge amounts of ‘waste’.

Since most of this food, if intercepted in time, is good for human consumption, we prefer to refer to this as surplus food. This food becomes surplus because of inherent weaknesses throughout the consumer goods value chain.

John Stremlau is Honorary Professor, International Relations, at the Universityof the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He served from January 2006 until January 2015 as vice president for peace programs at The Carter Center, where he oversaw the Center's programs to advance human rights, democracy, and conflict resolution globally; regional cooperation in the Americas; and promotion of grassroots democracy, rule of law, and social justice in China.
From 1998 to 2006, he resided in South Africa where he was Jan Smuts Professor, Head of the International Relations Department, University of the Witwatersrand.
