It’s all things CLEAN UP, with this week (14 – 20 Sept) being Clean Up & Recycle Week in SA which ends off with International Coastal Clean-up Day this Saturday, 19 Sept.
Every year, the world produces about 300 million tonnes of plastic, and at least 105 tonnes is estimated to reach the sea from land-based sources in South Africa each year – making SA a massive contributor to plastic sea water. Further to this South Africa sends around 95 million tonnes of waste to its 826 landfill sites and less than 40% of the materials are recycled. Additionally we produce upwards of 65 million tonnes of hazardous waste of which only 6% is recycled.

The Sagole Baobab (also Sagole Big Tree, Muri kunguluwa (i.e. tree that roars), or Muvhuyu wa Makhadzi) is the largest baobab tree in South Africa. It is located east from Tshipise, in Vendaland, Limpopo Province and has a trunk diameter 10.47 metres, circumference 32.89 metres.

That means, there is a need of approx. 18–20 people to com-plete embracing the tree with open hands. This is also the stoutest tree in South Africa, after two other large baobabs, the Glencoe and Sunland Baobabs, collapsed in 2009 and 2016 respectively.

July 2020 The Market Theatre Foundation Council announced TSHIAMO MOKGADI as its new CEO. She started in her new job August 1st. Tshiamo Mokgadi’ s passion for the creative industry and her work experience, which is centred mostly around planning, financing & administration gave her competitive edge over other candidates.

Her in-depth knowledge comes from over a decade experience in cultural and theatre management, at three major cultural institutions - the Market Theatre Foundation in Johannesburg, the Playhouse Company in Durban, and the State Theatre in Pretoria.

Her academic background includes a BA degree in Dramatic Arts from Wits University, and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Henley Business School.

A Pan African collaboration has been underway this week at the South African Book Fair as a virtual event from September 11th till today the 13th.
The initiative is a collaborative and co-ordinated approach towards increasing the promotion of local, African-owned and -controlled book production industries as well as the exchange of writers, illustrators and storytellers on the continent’s national book fair platforms.

Rachel Kolisi, wife of 2019 Rugby World Cup winning Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi, recently took to social media to voice her unhappiness with the publication of an updated edition of the unauthorised Siya Kolisi biography penned by author Jeremy Daniel: Siya Kolisi Against All Odds.

Rachel Kolisi expressed the view that Siya Kolisi’s story should be his to tell and he did not approve the biography, or benefit from it in any way. In an emotive post, she called for a boycott of the unauthorised biography in order to #SaveSiyasStory.
