An increasingly racially and ethnically diverse field of writers, both in the US and abroad, are using fiction (Speculative, Science, Fantasy) to reimagine their world and their future, as well as complex problems like climate change, the legacies of colonialism and globalization, violence against women, inequality and other issues. A panel of writers and experts discuss how fiction genres that used to be identified with aliens, spaceships, and monsters, coming out mainly from a Western, white, male perspective (with some exceptions), have become a popular way to deal -or react to world realities.

Panelist include: Ericka A. Hoagland, Associate Professor & Coordinator of Graduate Studies, English & Creative Writing, Stephen F. Austin State University; Co-Author of Science Fiction, Imperialism, and the Third World; Libia Brenda, Writer, Editor, and Translator, based in Mexico City; Climate Imagination Fellow, Center for Science and the Imagination, Arizona State University; Ken Liu, American Author of speculative fiction; winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy awards; winner of top genre honors in Japan, Spain, and France; Isis Asare, CEO/Founder of Sistah Scifi, first Black-owned bookstore focused on science fiction & fantasy in the US, validated by the American Booksellers Association; Samit Basu, Indian Novelist and Filmmaker whose body of work includes science fiction, fantasy and superhero novels, children's books, graphic novels, short stories, and nonfiction.

Public fears about using public transit have risen dramatically over the last 2 years, as stories about random — and sometimes fatal — attacks on passengers have been front-page news. The streets around public transportation are no safer. Women, seniors, people of color, and members of the disabled and LGBTQ+ communities are disproportionately the targets of such attacks and often find no recourse when they report such incidents to local law enforcement. Speakers this week will discuss new legislation addressing the safety of public transportation and the streets, policies to ensure safety on public transport, and ground-level initiatives already in place.

One victim will share her story of being attacked on the New York subway system. Speakers include: California State Senator Dave Min; Janice Li, Bay Area Rapid Transit Board President; Peter Kerre, Founder of Safe Walks NYC; Esther Lee, who was attacked on the New York subway system.

A new study estimates that 1 in 50 deaths of otherwise healthy children under age 5 around the world is due to a common virus that’s currently surging in the US: respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. Pediatric intensive care units around the US are overflowing or at capacity with children experiencing RSV.

Speakers this week will discuss the causes related to the surge of cases; how parents can distinguish between RSV, a cold, and Covid-19 in their young children, preventive measures - especially vaccines and boosters - and therapeutics and treatment.

1 out of every 2 people in California - including children - have been exposed to domestic violence, according to new research by the Blue Shield Foundation of California. Nationally, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience physical violence by their intimate partner at some point during their lifetimes, according to CDC data.

Domestic violence can take many forms. Technology abuse - stalking, harassing someone by text, using apps to track their whereabouts - and coercive control are two forms of violence that often go unreported.

Speakers this week will focus on DV via technology, coercive control, policy at the California state level, and policy changes emerging from the Biden administration, including the expansion of the Violence Against Women Act and the White House plan. Speakers will also address whether immigrants are more vulnerable to abuse because they lack the resources and support for help.

On Oct. 31, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on two cases -- SFFA v. Harvard and SFFA v. University of North Carolina -- that will determine the future of affirmative action. The cases bring together universities, civil rights organizations, and student activists in support of race conscious admissions policies and equitable education access for students of color. Speakers will provide background on the Harvard and UNC cases, discuss what's at stake for students of color in maintaining race-conscious admissions, and the power of student activism in the effort to support affirmative action.

Panelist include: John C. Yang, President and CEO, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC; David Hinojosa, Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law; Michaele Turnage-Young, Legal Defense Fund; Sally Chen, Harvard graduate and one of student amici in the Harvard case.
