• September 18, 2018The Area film documents Englewood residents' fight against displacement by a railroad company

  The Area is a documentary about corporate cronyism and displacement on the

  South Side of Chicago. It tells the story of Englewood resident Deborah Payne, one

  of hundreds of homeowners who were forced out of the neighborhood while Norfolk

  Southern Railway bought up, home-by-home, 85 acres of property to expand its freight

  terminal. The result?

  Tens of thousands of trains and trucks going through the community every day

  increasing pollution and traffic but also boosting the economic worth of the area.

  Co-producer and protagonist of the film Deborah Payne along with Communications and

  Distribution Manager, Luis Perez joined Jill Hopkins on The Morning AMp to talk

  about the documentary.

  The Area is currently screening in Chicago at The Gene Siskel Film Center until

• September 13, 201896 Acres Project examines the impact of incarceration at the Cook County Jail with site-specific art

  Radioactive is a series of community-engaged radio/visual broadcasts

  located between the largest architecture of Chicago’s West Side, the Cook County

  Department of Corrections, and the working-class residential area of the Lawndale

  communities. María Gaspar, the lead artist of Radioactive and Assistant Professor at

  the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Michael De Anda Muñiz, co-instructor of

  Radioactive and PhD Candidate in Sociology at UIC, along with Radioactive Ensemble

  members Rahmon Ali and Alexander Soto spoke with Jesse and Jill on The Morning AMp

  about the project.

  corners of the city that have been muted by sleek development. A book birthed in the

  amber glow of Chicago streetlamps, "Night Moves" is about a transformative moment of

• September 06, 2018DeRay Mckesson on the importance of storytelling in activism & new book On the Other Side of Freedom

  In August 2014, following the fatal shooting death of Michael Brown by a

  white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, DeRay Mckesson took to the streets in

  protest of police violence. He joined up with what went on to become the Black Lives

  Matter movement. Since then, Mckesson - with his signature blue vest - became one of

  the most recognizable faces of the growing movement against police brutality. He is

  now a formidable civil rights activist, community organizer, and the host of Crooked

  Media’s podcast Pod Save the People.

  His first book, “On the Other Side of Freedom” is a timely exploration of social

  justice, race, and politics, delivered by someone with an insider's point of view.

  Jill Hopkins spoke with DeRay on The Morning AMp about his book, his views on hope

  and fighting for a better world, the importance of storytelling in activism, as well

  as activism "from the inside."

  Melanin Voices is a performance series of poetry and live literature

  created to showcase the local and unsung voices and highlight the narratives

  illuminated from their writings. The theme of this year’s show series is “The Black

  and Latinx Connection”. Audiences will be taken on a poetic journey to uncover the

  sociopolitical parallel narratives between the Black and Latinx community. Glenance

  Green is the Founder of A g Thing which presents The Melanin Voices, and Kim Chayeb

  is a poetic performer in the Melanin Voices Collective. They joined Jesse and Jill
