Christ’s message calls all churches to continued growth in Christlikeness while rejecting the allurements to immorality and idolatry so that we will be a church faithful to Jesus Christ until the end.

Christ’s third message to one of the seven churches built upon the first two messages recorded. Christ had already affirmed His hatred of the deeds of the Nicolaitans [see 2:6] and had called for believers to not fear suffering, but to be faithful until death [see 2:10]. The message to the angel of the church of Pergamum warned of the danger of tolerating false teaching in an otherwise faithful church.

Jesus, the resurrected One, knows the plight of His suffering people and calls them to courageous faithfulness under persecution, even unto death, since He will give them the crown of life and keep them from the second death.

Christ’s messages to the seven churches were applicable to the individual church addressed, the other six churches who received the letter, and all churches throughout the Church Age.

In this passage, we witness three heart-breaking consequences of unchecked sin within David’s family so that we would not ignore God’s prophetic word.

The Ruler of all has revealed through His prophetic word His unalterable plan for the world and His all-powerful care for His Church through His Spirit, so that we would be blessed through our hearing and obeying Him.
