Christ confronted the spiritual self-sufficiency and self-deception of the Laodicean church so that Anchor Bible Church will purchase from Him what we are lacking as we respond to His loving appeal for corporate zeal and repentance and individual fellowship with Him.

Christ commended the church in Philadelphia for fidelity despite weakness, and He pledged to vindicate them against their enemies and keep them out of the unprecedented testing that will fall upon the whole world so that The Anchor Bible Church would also hold fast its confession in Christ assured that He will deliver us from the Great Tribulation and give us future stability and a new identity.

Christ’s message to the Church at Sardis, unlike His previous messages, has no commendation, but instead He warns them as a spiritually dying church to wake up, repent and to strengthen what little life remains there, for their eternal security is dependent on their lively relationship to Him.

Christ’s message calls all churches to continued growth in Christlikeness while rejecting the allurements to immorality and idolatry so that we will be a church faithful to Jesus Christ until the end.

Christ’s third message to one of the seven churches built upon the first two messages recorded. Christ had already affirmed His hatred of the deeds of the Nicolaitans [see 2:6] and had called for believers to not fear suffering, but to be faithful until death [see 2:10]. The message to the angel of the church of Pergamum warned of the danger of tolerating false teaching in an otherwise faithful church.

Jesus, the resurrected One, knows the plight of His suffering people and calls them to courageous faithfulness under persecution, even unto death, since He will give them the crown of life and keep them from the second death.

Christ’s messages to the seven churches were applicable to the individual church addressed, the other six churches who received the letter, and all churches throughout the Church Age.

In this passage, we witness three heart-breaking consequences of unchecked sin within David’s family so that we would not ignore God’s prophetic word.

The Ruler of all has revealed through His prophetic word His unalterable plan for the world and His all-powerful care for His Church through His Spirit, so that we would be blessed through our hearing and obeying Him.
