Veterinarian Lynn Simpson, who has served on 57 live export voyages, explains what animals go through on livestock ships like Spiridon II.

The vessel, which is carrying nearly 3,000 cows, has been stranded at sea for over 60 days. The ship has not been allowed to dump waste for 3 or 4 weeks. Animals are covered in shit by now.

The ship left from Uruguay to Turkey with 2901 female cows, half of them pregnant. The animals were rejected in Turkey over wrong paperwork of 469 animals. All cows were banned and forced to return, which means a death sentence for the animals.

Simpson, one of the world’s most experienced live export vets, has seen firsthand the toll this trade takes on animals. She advocates for the end of a trade that's unnecessary and outdated.
