In this episode, Jan and RJ interview Dr. Jean-Philippe Burckert. JP received his Master’s in Chemistry with a specialization in Life Sciences from the University of Kaiserslautern in 2012 and completed his Ph.D. studies at the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) in Bioinformatics and Computational Immunology.

His Ph.D. work was presented at over 20 international conferences. After academia, JP joined the Bioinformatics consulting firm BISC Global as Senior Bioinformatics Consultant, where he helped to establish the new department in Boston, MA.

Leveraging his rare skillset in deciphering immune repertoires, JP worked with over a dozen small and large pharma and biotech companies in the Cambridge and SF Bay area providing the specialized bioinformatics capacity for their immune-oncology, autoimmune disease, antibody discovery and vaccine design groups.

JP is now the head of the computational and informatics efforts at Centivax and leads an amazing team of scientists and informaticists.

In this episode, Jan and RJ interview Shahrad Daraeikia. Shahrad spends some time talking about his journey to becoming a scientist at the forefront of innovation in the biotech industry. This journey involved changing majors from Pre-Med to Pre-Pharmacy followed by the decision to go to graduate school for something completely different, on the other side of the country.

Instead, Shahrad opted to attend graduate school at the University of San Francisco in pursuit of a Masters in Science in Biotechnology. Shahrad then encountered Jake Glanville (CEO of Distributed Bio), became an intern at the company, and has since grown into a position that required him to directly impact the revolutionary techniques being utilized to discover and engineer powerful antibodies in the fight against a global pandemic.

In addition to the influenza vaccine studies, she directs all contract research programs for therapeutic antibody discovery and optimization with phage display libraries at Distributed Bio, including over 50 discovery campaigns for biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical companies across the globe.

In this episode Jan and RJ interview Airforce Veteran and President of Walsh University Dr. Tim Collins.

Dr. Collins spent the past 14 years at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, the nation’s oldest and largest university-affiliated research center based in Maryland. Collins also spent 23 years in the U.S. Air Force, including eight years as a senior officer responsible for operations in the United States and Asia.

In 1976 Dr. Collins graduated from high school at age 16 followed by a two-year journey through the Georgia Military College where he received his associate degree in engineering. He then enrolled in the U.S. Air Force Academy. In the episode we discuss just how intense the service academies are, and how they are considered liberal arts institutions.

The apex of this episode includes a conversation stemming from the events around a terrorist attack on Khobar Towers in 1996. Dr. Collins earned a purple heart after being wounded at Khobar Towers. The bomb wounded hundreds of troops and claimed the lives of 19 service members.

The conversation came to an end with Dr. Collins offering advice to emerging leaders, leaders that are actively trying to lead in a crisis, as well as how he manages stressful situations.

In this episode Jan and RJ interview Eric Thompson. Eric was born and raised in Northeast Ohio. While still a college student, Eric began performing magic and comedy in local bars. Eric has shared the stage with some of the most famous acts in comedy including Jay Leno, Drew Carey, Pat Paulson, and David Brenner. 

He has also opened for many musical guests such as Englebert Humperdink, Kenny Loggins, and The Spinners!

After an experience performing magic for local kids on a cruise excursion, Eric decided it time to travel the world and help bring joy to as many places as possible. Since that fateful cruise, he has traveled to over twenty-seven countries and performed in front of COUNTLESS people.
