Stores pressure is already a concern in south-east England, East Anglia, south-west Scotland and the Highlands, so colony weight and recent intake are worth checking rather than judging the colony only by flight activity.

Nectar collection weakens across much of the UK as the period goes on. Bees may still be flying, but useful intake can fall even while flowers remain visible, so entrance activity on its own can give a misleading impression of what is actually coming home.

A useful point this week is that inspection weather and stores pressure are not the same thing. You can have a perfectly workable spell for opening a hive while the colony is still struggling to replace what it is using. This week, for example, north-east England and Northern Ireland show stores pressure building later even though there are still usable inspection opportunities at times. So a decent inspection window shouldn’t be read as evidence that forage is good. If you do get into a colony, it’s worth looking at usable stores, colony weight and recent intake rather than judging things from flying activity alone.

For autumn feeding, the usual choice is heavy syrup, roughly 2:1 sugar to water by weight, when a colony genuinely needs to put on stores and bees are still active enough to take it down and process it. It’s better for building winter stores than thin spring syrup. Once conditions become too cool or unsettled for colonies to process syrup reliably, fondant becomes the more practical option. Fondant is especially useful as a late-autumn or winter insurance/emergency feed because it can sit directly above the cluster and doesn’t require the colony to handle as much water. It can also be used earlier if a colony is short and you don’t want to add more liquid feed, but for actually building substantial stores in autumn, heavy syrup is usually the first choice.

This is a broad UK picture. Conditions at your own apiary may differ.

Here’s the UK bee-weather picture for the next four days. I’ll start with the next two days, then look ahead to Tuesday and Wednesday, covering inspection, forage and swarm weather along the way.

Inspection. Inspection weather is fairly mixed across the UK. Wales, north-west England, Northern Ireland, and south-west and north-east Scotland are on the more marginal side, with showers shortening the useful inspection window in several of those areas.

South-west and north-east England also start off more marginal, but conditions improve on Monday as the showers ease. South-east England and the Midlands go the other way: conditions are workable at first, then become more marginal on Monday as wind and showers become more of a problem.

East Anglia looks generally workable. Across the Highlands conditions become more mixed by Monday, while central Scotland also becomes more marginal.

Forage. Nectar is the bigger concern. Collection is very low in south-west Scotland, and low across south-west, north-west and north-east England, Wales, and north-east Scotland.

By Monday, nectar collection also falls to low in East Anglia and the Midlands. There is some improvement in Northern Ireland and central Scotland, although only to low, while the Highlands improve to a more mixed picture.

Wind is making it harder for bees to work exposed flowers in south-west and south-east England. Stores pressure is elevated in the Highlands, while in central Scotland it eases back to moderate by Monday as nectar availability improves.

Pollen remains more supportive than nectar across many areas, although the weather is still restricting how much of it the bees can actually collect.

Swarm. Swarm-weather opportunity is mixed in Wales, north-west England, and south-west and north-east Scotland.

There is quite a bit of improvement elsewhere by Monday. South-west and north-east England move from usable to high, Northern Ireland from limited to high, and south-east England from mixed to high.

The Highlands improve from limited to mixed, central Scotland from limited to usable, and the Midlands from mixed to usable. East Anglia drops slightly from very high to high, but still has strongly favourable swarm weather.

As always at this point in the season, weather suitability is the opportunity, not the trigger.

Inspection. Tuesday looks reasonably workable across much of England and Wales, but conditions become more marginal again on Wednesday. Showers increasingly limit inspection opportunities in south-west and north-west England, East Anglia, the Midlands and Wales.

North-east England, Northern Ireland, and much of Scotland from the south-west through to the Highlands remain more marginal. In Northern Ireland and those parts of Scotland, showers are shortening the useful inspection windows. Central Scotland also becomes more marginal by Wednesday.

Forage. Nectar collection remains poor. It is very low in central Scotland and the Highlands, and low across Wales, north-east England, Northern Ireland, and south-west and north-east Scotland.

By Wednesday, south-east England and East Anglia also fall to low. North-west England improves somewhat, moving into a mixed picture.

Showers continue to interrupt useful foraging time in north-west England, Northern Ireland and central Scotland. In the Highlands, stores pressure rises back to elevated by Wednesday while nectar availability remains poor.

Swarm. Swarm-weather opportunity settles into a broadly mixed picture across the UK.

I’d be thinking about queenrightness, the overall condition of the colony and, increasingly, stores. 

Stores deserve particular attention in central Scotland and the Highlands. Elevated stores pressure is a reason to check colony weight, usable stores and recent intake.

For 16 to 19 August 2026, there are useful inspection opportunities in many parts of the UK, while inspection is more restricted in Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland from the south-west to the Highlands, mainly because showers and poor light or damp conditions are squeezing the daytime opportunity.

Forage is the bigger concern. Wind is limiting how effectively bees can work exposed flowers across a lot of the UK. Recent dry weather is reducing nectar reward in England and Wales. Showers add another problem in Northern Ireland, central and north-east Scotland, and the Highlands, by interrupting the time bees can actually get out and forage.

Later in the period, north-east England, East Anglia, and the Midlands become less helpful for both inspection and forage later. Forage also improves in south-west and south-east England.

How can I tell whether colonies are under stores pressure?

Hefting or weighing, looking at recent intake and judging the amount of usable stores tell you a great deal. If you are unsure of weight, ask another beekeeper or mentor to show you how to heft hives and judge weight.

Pressure can build quickly when poor forage lasts for several days, particularly later in summer when a busy colony may still be using stores heavily.

A forecast stores signal is a prompt to check the colony, not an automatic instruction to feed as you also need to keep space for brood. Hefting or weighing, looking at recent intake and judging the amount of usable stores helps.

Pressure can build quickly when poor forage lasts for several days, particularly later in summer when a busy colony may still be using stores heavily.

John Richardson looks at what the developing UK weather pattern may mean for inspections, forage access, swarm-weather suitability and colony stores.

The main contrast this week is that some beekeepers may find a workable opportunity to inspect, while bees have a much less encouraging chance of bringing useful forage home. Wind is making exposed flowers harder to work, and dry conditions are reducing the nectar reward in several regions.

Visible flight at the hive entrance doesn’t necessarily mean a strong nectar flow. Bees may still be active while the amount coming home remains disappointing.

Today, workable inspection opportunities appear across south-west and south-east England, East Anglia, the Midlands, Wales, central Scotland and the Highlands.

Conditions are more marginal in north-west England, north-east England, Northern Ireland, south-west Scotland and north-east Scotland.

Later in the period:

We’re moving into late summer, so use a suitable inspection window for a clear reason. Queenrightness, colony condition and stores are becoming increasingly important.
