At the end of the eighteenth century, the Cinque Terre came under the control of revolutionary France. In 1797, with the arrival of the troops led by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Ligurian Republic was born, remaining the local governing body until 1805, the year in which all of Liguria became part of the French Empire as a Department of Genoa.
