    Hidden among hills and paths are corners of the Cinque Terre that tourism barely touches — yet long ago, they were the beating heart of life in this land.
    Here, the first settlements were born: places where people learned to shape the mountains with terraces and to live in harmony with nature.
    Archaeological discoveries tell of ancient communities — from the Ligurian castellari to prehistoric finds on Palmaria and Monterosso — evidence of human presence dating back to the Paleolithic.
    From these roots, carved in stone and sea, the story of the Cinque Terre began — today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    There are places that time has almost erased, yet they continue to live on in stories and in stone.High above Riomaggiore, among the woods and the springs of the Rio Maggiore, once stood a forgotten village: **Cacinagora**.An ancient farming settlement, perhaps founded by Greek refugees, that guarded a sacred image of the Madonna — later venerated in the sanctuary of Montenero.Today, only silence remains, and the lingering charm of a name that tells the most ancient origins of the Cinque Terre.

    Ci sono luoghi che il tempo ha quasi cancellato, ma che continuano a vivere nelle storie e nelle pietre.
    Sulle alture di Riomaggiore, tra i boschi e le sorgenti del Rio Maggiore, sorgeva un villaggio dimenticato: Cacinagora.
    Un antico insediamento agricolo, forse fondato da profughi greci, che custodiva un’immagine sacra della Madonna, poi venerata nel santuario di Montenero.

    Here, the attentive traveler can still find the echoes and inspirations of one of the great poets of the 20th century, Eugenio Montale, within a natural and scenic setting that remains largely unspoiled.
    These are the same “ridges of hills and sky” recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and later deemed worthy of protection through the establishment of the National Park in 1999.

  • The arrival of the French at the end of the 18th and the trees of liberty
    At the end of the eighteenth century, the Cinque Terre came under the control of revolutionary France. In 1797, with the arrival of the troops led by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Ligurian Republic was born, remaining the local governing body until 1805, the year in which all of Liguria became part of the French Empire as a Department of Genoa.

  • L'arrivo dei francesi sul finire del Settecento e gli alberi della libertà
    Alla fine del XVIII secolo le Cinque Terre passarono sotto il controllo della Francia rivoluzionaria. Nel 1797, infatti, con l'arrivo delle truppe guidate da Napoleone Bonaparte nacque la Repubblica Ligure, che, tra fasi alterne, rimase in carica fino al 1805, anno in cui tutta la Liguria entrò a far parte dell’impero francese con il nome di Dipartimento di Genova.
