Lampreys may be jawless fish, but their fossils have a lot to say about long-held assumptions concerning evolution. On this episode, McLain, an assistant professor of biology and geology at TMU, discusses a recent article entitled “Fossil lamprey larvae from South Africa overturn assumptions about vertebrate origins.” The article was written by Robert W. Gess, a paleontologist who worked with Tetsuto Miyashita, Kristen Tietjen and Michael Coates to publish a paper in “Nature” highlighting their findings. Sarah discusses her undergraduate and graduate education at TMU and how it has led into her current work as an athletic trainer at College of the Canyons.

Prof. Sarah Dixon knows our School of Music inside and out, as an alumna of our music program and our current Director of Vocal Studies. On this episode of The Bit, she talks with Dr. Horn about her academic journey and her life now as a wife, mother, and faculty member.

Kyle Houlton (class of 2010) is this week's guest on The Bit. When he graduated from TMU with a degree in kinesiology, he thought he wanted to pursue an advanced degree in that field. But 10 years later, he is now the senior pastor of a church plant in Santa Ana, Calif., and the associate director of development at Olive Crest, a nonprofit serving abused and neglected children. He talks with Dr. Horn about his career-changing love for the local church and why the church should be on the frontlines of serving the vulnerable.

This episode of The Bit marks Dr. Horn’s first time interviewing a couple on the podcast. Ryan and Lexi Correll met in 2006 at TMU’s satellite campus in Israel, and they are now married and raising two young kids. Ryan works as a high school math teacher, and Lexi runs a bookkeeping business with 18 employees. They discuss the challenge of managing competing responsibilities, as well as the unusual opportunities Ryan has had as a teacher in 2020.

Hugh Jackson (class of 2008) believes that the critical thinking skills he learned at TMU were invaluable during his time in law school. But he says that what he learned here about living a life of consistent, holistic faithfulness to Christ has been even more valuable. In this episode he talks with Dr. Horn about TMU's political studies program and his current work as an LA County deputy district attorney.

Katrina Skaar earned her bachelor’s, teaching credential, and master’s degree from TMU, and she now teaches high school math in the Hart District. She talks with Dr. Horn about how her time here as a student athlete prepared her to live out her faith as a teacher and marathon runner.
