What does it really take to make a living as an artist? Why do so many talented artists struggle to turn their creativity into a sustainable business?
In this episode of The Artists’ Table, I sit down with James Carter, founder of Creative Flair in the UK, working artist and author of VISIBLE, a book dedicated to helping artists build their careers beyond the studio.
James has spent years connecting with artists, galleries and creative professionals, gaining a fascinating perspective on what works, what doesn't and what artists often overlook.
We explore the business behind the art, from getting noticed and building relationships with collectors to understanding galleries, pricing, social media and the opportunities available to independent artists. We also discuss his experiences in the international art world and what artists can learn from events such as Art Basel Paris.
It's an insightful conversation about making your work visible, recognising your value and understanding that creating great art is only one part of building a career.
Whether you're an emerging artist or have been painting for years, there's plenty here to think about.
Because as I always say, it's not about the how-to, it's about the why not.

When you buy a piece of original art, you're buying so much more than something beautiful to hang on your wall.
In this episode of The Artists' Table, I explore the connection between artists, their work and the people who choose to live with it.
Every painting carries a story. Sometimes it's the artist's experience, sometimes it's an emotion captured on canvas, and sometimes it's something entirely personal that the collector sees in the work.
I share my thoughts on choosing original art, trusting your emotional response and why the story behind a painting can make it even more meaningful.
Whether you're an experienced collector or thinking about buying your first original artwork, this episode is an invitation to look beyond the colours and composition and discover what truly connects you to a piece.

What happens when you pick up a paintbrush for the first time at 50?
In this episode of The Artists' Table, I share how I discovered painting while raising capital for my technology startup, The Room Xchange, and how something that began as a creative outlet eventually changed the direction of my life.
Painting gave me balance through the pressures of building and running a business. What I didn't realise at the time was that I was also creating the foundations for an entirely new chapter.
From my first painting to exhibitions, commissions and eventually mentoring other artists, I reflect on what happens when you allow yourself to explore something new, regardless of your age.
Because sometimes the things we do simply because we love them become far more important than we ever imagined.
