Welcome to another podcast and this week, although the tennis news out of the UK has been up and down, we are sticking with the Brits. There’s been good news for Andy Murray, the former world number one has scored a morale boosting win against old rival Rafael Nadal at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi. Great also to see Nadal back in action. We’ll hear from Andy later in the programme and we also hear from doubles player Neal Skupski, but we start this time with Andy’s brother, Jamie Murray who’s had a frustrating week. It is no mean feat putting on any tennis event and as Tournament Director and player he would have been looking forward to the Battle of the Brits more than anyone until it was postponed on Friday, the latest sporting victim of Covid 19. The tournament will be pushed back to 2022, which, on the plus side, gives him even more time to pick up ideas and tips from other events, which is exactly what he was doing when he spoke with Barry Cowan at the recent Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
In this phenomenal conversation, Jill Craybas sits down with former British player and coach, turned commentator, Mark Petchey to discuss what he's learnt during his time in the game. From working with the likes of Andy Murray, Emma Raducanu and Maria Sakkari, to his views on US college tennis, finding mentors and why he thinks the only success he's had is as a coach, this interview is packed full of insight and honesty.
Even in the off-season we’re still globe-trotting! We’re with a South African, a Brit and an Italian coaching a Finn, but with the groups and match schedule announced this week for the ATP Cup on the 1st to 9th January in Sydney, where better to start than with an Aussie and one very likely to be take his place in the home team. Mike Cation recently caught up with a doubles specialist Luke Saville who’s spent most of the year on the road.
Hubert Hurkacz's coach, Craig Boynton sits down with Jill Craybas to talk about working with the young Pole as well as subjects like on-court coaching, nutrition, rest and recovery and what he's learnt from the players he's coached in the past.
This week we are in the camps of five men who between them have 48 ATP tour titles and they have a bit in common. They’re all over 30, they’re all still going strong and they’ve all had to contend with some serious injuries over the past few years. Over the next 30 minutes or so we’ll hear from Marin Cilic, Milos Raonic and David Goffin, we’re with Grigor Dimitrov’s coach Dante Bottini and we start with the senior statesman of the group, title winner in Newport earlier this year having dropped outside the world’s top 100, at 35 years young South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.
